Cabinet Hardware Specialties: The Finishing Touch Can Make the Biggest Impact

By Irene O’Connor, Linked Media

For more than seventy years, Cabinet Hardware Specialties has built a reputation as a go-to destination for both professionals and homeowners looking to elevate their spaces – right down to the smallest details. From hinges and drawer slides to counter brackets, levers, and door hardware, Cabinet Hardware Specialties supplies the essential mechanics that make a kitchen or bathroom function seamlessly. At the same time, they have an extensive selection of decorative knobs, pulls, and specialty pieces.

Part wholesale distributor, part retail showroom, the business on Chelton Avenue in West Hartford’s Design District carries more than 60,000 items on site, ranging from the highly functional to the purely decorative. But according to Manager Michael Bruno, it’s the pieces people often overlook that can make the biggest difference.

Bruno believes cabinet hardware should not be an afterthought. “You’re going to be using it every day” he said, “If you’re going to spend $50,000 or more on a kitchen renovation, you shouldn’t just settle.”

The “Jewelry” of the Kitchen

Bruno says that cabinet hardware has been called “the jewelry of your kitchen.” It’s a fitting description. Hardware can transform cabinetry – whether refreshing a dated 1990s kitchen with modern finishes or adding a sleek, contemporary touch to a brand-new design. Current trends lean toward modern simplicity and clean lines, with finishes like satin nickel, black, and satin bronze leading the way.

A Legacy Business, Reimagined

Originally founded in the 1950s, Cabinet Hardware Specialties has long served custom cabinet makers, millwork shops, and kitchen and bath designers throughout the region. Bruno has an engineering background – an asset when it comes to problem-solving and helping customers find the right fit for their homes. He focuses on maintaining the company’s legacy while expanding its reach to homeowners.

A Hands-On Experience

One of the showroom’s biggest advantages in an increasingly online world is the in-person experience. Customers can see, touch, and compare products in person – an important factor when selecting items that will be used daily.

Bruno says the staff is very knowledgeable. Many have been there for many years and have a great deal of product knowledge and experience, including Bill Wyckoff who is the VP of sales with over 30 years of experience and an expert in cabinet lighting.

The staff works closely with everyone from seasoned contractors to first-time renovators, offering guidance on everything from design choices to hard-to-find replacement parts. Whether it’s finding an unusual cabinet hinge from decades past or helping coordinate finishes across a full kitchen redesign, the team prides itself on solving problems. Design professionals are frequent visitors, but the doors are just as open to the public, with discounted pricing available across the board.

More Than a Final Touch

While cabinet hardware may be one of the last decisions made in a renovation, Bruno believes it should carry far more weight.

“It’s worth it,” he says. “This is something you’re using every day. Quality matters – you don’t want finishes chipping or screws loosening over time.”

In many cases, he adds, even a simple change – like swapping out knobs and pulls ≠ can completely refresh a space without a full remodel.

At its core, Cabinet Hardware Specialties is about helping customers get those details right. Because in a well-designed home, it’s often the smallest elements that leave the biggest impression.
