For the several months, Hayes-Velhage Post 96 has been the recipient of donations generated from royalties obtained through the sale of food-shopping bags by the Community Bag Programs run by three West Hartford food stores: Big Y at Bishops Corner, and Stop & Shop stores located on Farmington Avenue, and on Newington Road.

Using the proceeds from these programs, together with monies from several other fund raising efforts, Hayes-Velhage Post 96 was able to make significant contributions to the West Hartford Food Bank, the Fisher House Foundation, and Special Olympics Connecticut.

Post Commander Patrick Harrell said, “The keystone of our organization is ‘service.’ It is the foundation for the four Pillars of our focus: to serve our nation, our veterans, our community, and our youth. These program contributions to our ‘service’ mission were extended across three of our Four Pillars and are greatly appreciated.”

Certificates of Appreciation were presented to management of each of the stores in recognition of their support of American Legion Hayes-Velhage Post 96.

The American Legion was chartered and incorporated by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization devoted to mutual helpfulness. It is the nation’s largest wartime veterans service organization, committed to mentoring youth and sponsorship of wholesome programs in our communities, advocating patriotism and honor, promoting strong national security, and continued devotion to our fellow service members and veterans.

The American Legion Post 96 of West Hartford has been serving our Veterans and Community since 1922 and is open to all military veterans who have served honorably and military personnel currently on active duty. Further information is available at www.post96.org or by contacting the Post at: Hayes-Velhage Post 96, P.O.
