Conard boys swimming and diving improved to 3-0 on the season Tuesday evening with a 97-87 win over Wethersfield.
The meet began with a close race in the 200 Medley relay with both teams posting season best times, however it was the Conard A relay team (Nick Hall, Andy Filotto, Luke Scheinfeldt, Alex Petit) who were able to edge out the victory, while the B relay team (Matt Krol, Zach Goslee, Kian Abolfath, James Auciello) were able to erase a three second advantage and take third, putting the Red Wolves up 10-4 to start the race.
Wethersfield was able to close some of the gap in the 200 Freestyle, winning the event 9-7, but Conard quickly erased any gains the Eagles made behind Andrew Phan’s first place finish in the 200 Individual Medley, and teammates Krol and Abolfath’s third and fourth place finishes. The Red Wolves and Eagles went on to split the points in the 50 Freestyle, making the score 36-26 at the break for diving.
Conard’s Auciello and Henry Drolet put on impressive performances, with Auciello winning the event with a score of 239.25 despite a strong showing by Wethersfield’s Chase Dumais. Drolet out dove Wethersfield’s third diver to take fourth place and split the event 8-8.
Coming out of the break the Eagles gave the Red Wolves several good races, with Filotto fending off a dual challenge from Piotr Wojtus and Paolo Pirrotta in the 100 Butterfly to take first, Hall edging out Cooper Schwartzman by nine one hundredths of a second in the 100 Freestyle for first, and Nathan Lowney staging a come from behind victory over Alex Ahrens in the 500 Freestyle that had fans and teammates on their feet until the very end.
While Wethersfield went on to win the 200 Freestyle Relay, Hall defeated Schwartzman for a second time in the 100 Backstroke, and Filotto and Goslee combined for a 1-2 finish in the 100 Breaststroke to push Conard to an insurmountable lead. The Red Wolves closed out the meet with a 1-2 finish in the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay behind Krol, Ethan Hunt, Scheinfeldt, and Goslee, and Lowney, Phan, Hall, and Filotto.
In addition to the win, the following individuals qualified for the state tournament:
- Nick Hall- 100 Freestyle
- Zach Goslee- 100 Breaststroke
Conard will travel to Windsor on Friday where they look to improve to 4-0 on the season.
