Conard Girls Swim and Dive Prevails at CCC West Divisional Meet

It was a great showing by West Hartford girls with Conard’s 200 medley relay team shattering the school record, Conard’s Kiley Phelan taking first place in diving, and Hall’s Tara Tiernan winning the 200 and 500 freestyle.

At the CCC West dual meet on Wednesday, Nov. 4, the Conard Girls Swim and Dive team won with a victory at Cornerstone over Hall, Southington, Farmington, Berlin and Newington. Conard’s score of 352 outpaced the second place finisher Hall, which came in with 269.

The meet opened up with the Conard team of Clara Capone, Bridget Williams, Annie Kirklin, and Maria Armillei shattering the Conard school 200 medley relay record with a winning time of 1:51.52, beating the previous record 1:53.35 by almost 2 seconds.

Other highlights of the afternoon included Tara Tiernan (Hall) winning the 200 and 500 freestyles, Allison Schroeder (Southington) won the 200 IM, Olivia Fournier (Southington) won the 50 and 100 freestyle, Conard’s Kiley Phelan placed first in Diving, while Berlin’s Olivia DeGroff won the 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke.

Clara Capone set another Conard school record in the 100 back with a time of 1:00.76. In the 200 free relay the Conard team of Tatiana St. Juste, Emma Dowd, Kyla Barry, and Maria Armillei took first place and in the 400 relay, Conard scored another first place win with the team of Armillei, Dowd, Marisa Haverty and Capone.

Other notable swims, providing individuals with an automatic entry into the state tournament included Kerry Buchanan (Southington in the 200 and 500 free), Barry (Conard 50 free), Libby Phillips (Conard 100 butterfly), Kelley Venora (Conard 100 breaststroke) and Hall’s Sarah Berman (100 Breaststroke).

Next up for the teams are the Swimming and Diving trials and finals beginning with diving on Wednesday, Nov. 11 at Bulkeley High School, followed by swimming trials on Saturday Nov. 14 at East Hartford High School and swimming finals on Tuesday, Nov. 17 at Southern Connecticut State University.
