Republicans hoping their party would unite behind a candidate got their wish Saturday morning, as the state convention by acclaim nominated state Sen. Ryan Fazio of Greenwich to be the party’s candidate for governor.

Fazio squared off with former New York Lt. Gov. Betsy McCaughey in a two-candidate race following the withdrawal of former New Britain Mayor Erin Stewart earlier this week. Fazio easily won the first round of voting 955-79. Following the vote, in which she failed to receive the required 15% of the delegates to force a primary, McCaughey withdrew her name from consideration. With Fazio the only remaining candidate, the convention made him their choice by acclaim in a voice vote.
