Derek Slap, currently serving his first full term in the state Senate, is launching his re-election campaign this week so he can keep working hard to help families and businesses in the 5th Senate district recover from the pandemic. Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2022.

“Public service comes with an incredible responsibility, especially during these challenging times,” said Slap. “People must be able to rely on their elected leaders to help them navigate state agencies, access unemployment benefits, and receive critical information. I’m gratified I’ve been able to be a resource for so many families and small businesses and truly be their ally in state government.”

Slap represents the towns of West Hartford, Burlington and parts of Farmington and Bloomfield. He was first elected in a special election in 2019 and then re-elected in November 2020. He is the Senate chair of the Higher Education Committee, vice chair of the Environment Committee, and a member of the Aging, Finance, and Government Administration & Elections committees.

Slap has helped to pass several significant pieces of legislation during his current two-year term. He introduced and led the passage of a landmark bill to combat age discrimination in the hiring process. As chair of the Higher Education Committee, he helped pass a comprehensive bill strengthening Connecticut’s workforce pipeline. Slap also co-sponsored more than ten bills, including initiatives to increase state funding for local schools, expand early voting and no-excuse absentee ballots, improve healthcare for children, and help small businesses.

“Connecticut continues to strengthen its economy and get its fiscal house in order,” said Slap. “We have more work to do this coming legislative session and beyond – and that’s why I’m so eager to run for re-election.”

Slap encourages constituents to reach out to him to share their priorities and offer feedback. He loves to engage with folks and believes the best ideas for legislation come from constituents. Supporters are encouraged to visit www.slapforsenate2022.com.
