Connecticut Senators Richard Blumenthal and Chris Murphy held a news briefing Wednesday to address the Trump administration’s attempt to freeze federal funding and its potential impact on the state.
During the briefing via video conference, Blumenthal and Murphy described the freeze as a major challenge, citing a series of executive actions that included a hiring freeze, cuts to federal subsidies, and the suspension of federal grants. According to the senators, these measures could have far-reaching consequences for Connecticut residents who rely on federally funded programs.
West Hartford Mayor Shari Cantor opened Tuesday night’s Town Council meeting with a statement about the freeze – which had not yet been rescinded – nothing the impact it could have on residents, including public safety, education, infrastructure improvements, and economic development. Like many many municipalities, West Hartford relies on a variety of types of federal support, and she urged the president to reconsider.
“By halting this funding, the administration is putting at risk not only the progress we’ve made in West Hartford, but also the wellbeing of our residents, particularly those who are the most vulnerable,” Cantor said Tuesday.
