The Town of West Hartford continues to make progress on its ongoing elevator and escalator modernization program. We are pleased to provide an update on recently completed work at Memorial Garage and the upcoming modernization of the Webster Walk elevator.
Webster Walk Elevator Modernization
Beginning Thursday, Oct. 1, 2026, modernization work will begin on the Webster Walk elevator. The project is expected to take approximately six weeks to complete.
During construction, the Webster Walk in Blue Back Square elevator will be unavailable for public use. The work will modernize the elevator’s major electrical and mechanical systems and make other improvements intended to enhance long-term reliability, safety, and accessibility.
During the elevator closure, the Webster Walk stairs will remain available between the South Main Street level and the lower Blue Back Square/LaSalle Road area. Visitors should plan accordingly during the temporary closure. Signage will be posted throughout the area to notify and assist the public.
Memorial Garage Escalator Update
The newly modernized escalator serving the lower level and first floor of Memorial Garage passed all required inspections and returned to public service on Sept. 21, 2026.
This represents another completed phase of the town’s larger modernization program. The next phase of escalator modernization at Memorial Garage, involving the escalators serving the upper levels, is scheduled to begin in mid-October.
The Town appreciates the continued patience and cooperation of residents, visitors, businesses, and employees as these improvements move forward. These projects represent an important long-term investment in the safety, reliability, accessibility, and overall condition of our public parking facilities and pedestrian areas.
