Excavation was delayed one day by rain, but by the time most commuters were departing for work Tuesday a giant hole had been dug in the middle of West Hartford Center.

A contractor is working on behalf of West Hartford’s Department of Public Works and the Metropolitan District Commission (MDC) to try to determine the cause of sinkholes which have been forming in the area of the Farmington Avenue and LaSalle Road intersection.

Director of Public Works John Phillips said early Tuesday that things are going well with the excavation and some abnormalities had already been discovered.
