Capital Classics’ performance of “As You Like It,” a Shakespereian comedy, offers a unique, family-friendly experience for Bard buffs and newcomers alike.
The quaint outdoor stage creates a pleasant atmosphere, and most audience members bring camping chairs, picnics, and blankets for the show. During the 7 p.m. performances, fading daylight gives way to starry summer skies – perfect ambiance for Shakespeare.
This performance of “As You Like It” is brimming with talent and enthusiasm. The energetic and passionate cast does a terrific job of bringing Shakespeare’s comedic love story to life. Dancing, singing, a “wrestling match,” and plenty of antics from the motley fool keep the audience engaged throughout the show.
Many of the cast members graduated from the Hartt School, and continue to act in other local productions. The show’s Dramaturg, Milla Cozart Riggio, has a PhD from Harvard University, and taught Shakespeare at Trinity College for 46 years. Geoffrey Sheehan, the Director, attended Wesleyan University for his M.A.L.S. in Theater.
Founded in 1991, Capital Classics is committed to “providing affordable, family-oriented, classical theater.” They also provide valuable job and training opportunities to Connecticut’s rising theater artists.
The Greater Hartford Shakespeare Festival has been produced through a partnership between Capital Classics and the University of Saint Joseph’s Carol Autorino Center for 18 years.

I saw “As You Like It” on Saturday evening and it was great fun. Well acted and staged, I have seen probably five of the Capital Classics summer Shakespeare productions, and this was far and away the best one I have seen. Grab your lawn chairs, a picnic, and a bottle of wine, you will have an enjoyable evening for sure.
