Hall Swimmers Set New School Records at Class L Championship

West Hartford’s Hall High School girls swimming and diving team competed Tuesday in the CIAC Class L championship meet, with many setting new personal records and breaking several school records.

Hall girls swimming and diving finished fifth at the CIAC Class L State Championships on Tuesday night, setting three new school records.

The opening event saw the 200 Medley Relay – senior Julia Seguro (backstroke); sophomore Mindy Zhao (breaststroke); senior Meghan Tiernan (butterfly); and sophomore Ziggy Edney (freestyle) – finish in fifth place with a season-best time of 1:52.07.

In the 200 Freestyle, teammates senior Molly Nordquist and sophomore Miriam Youel finished third and fourth with season-best times. Nordquist’s third place finish in 1:56.29 earned her All-State honors. Youel was just behind in 1:56.54.

Tiernan finished second in the 200 IM with a time of 2:02.47, lowering her own school record and earning All-State honors.  Teammate Zhao was ninth in 2:13.72, senior Katherine Manaresi was 15th in 2:18.57 with a season-best time, and junior Gwen Bye was 24th with a time of 2:22.15.

In the 50 yard Freestyle, Edney finished 20th (26.49) and Seguro was 22nd (26.63).

In diving, senior Mayalin Glooch was 16th (295.30) and sophomore Sloan Golas was 24th (238.90).

Nordquist finished eighth in the 100 yard butterfly in 1:00.28.

Tiernan set another school record on her way to winning the 500 Freestyle in a time of 4:55.13, earning her second All-State honors of the night. Youel was fourth in the 500 Freestyle with a time of 5:18.30.

The 200 Freestyle Relay team of Zhao, Manaresi, Nordquist and Edney finished third with a time of 1:42.29.

In the 100 Backstroke, freshman Claire Nordquist was 13th with a season-best time of 1:03.66. Seguro was 17th also with a season-best time of 1:03.91.

Zhao set a school record in the 100 Breaststroke in the next event, finishing fourth with a time of 1:08.03. Manaresi was 11th (1:12.44), and Bye 14th (1:13.27), both with season-best swims.

The final event of the night saw Hall’s 400 Freestyle Relay finish third in a time of 3:39.01 (Edney, M. Nordquist, Youel, and Tiernan).

All three relays will compete at Sunday’s State Open at Yale along with the following swimming in individual events: Tiernan (200 IM and 500 Free), M. Nordquist (200 Free and 100 Butterfly), Youel (200 and 500 Free), and Zhao (200 IM and 100 Breaststroke).
