From karate champion to pain specialist: Meet Monica Lita of Effective Motus

By Melissa Cole

Monica Lita of Effective Motus has been helping athletes and West Hartford residents recover from serious injuries and everyday aches and pains for the last four years. But how she got here is quite the story.

Lita grew up in Romania, where she lived until she was a young adult. Her sport was karate. She won 11 Romanian national championship titles, all while earning her master’s degree in sports science.

At 22, she had the opportunity to move to Italy, where she competed as a karate athlete. During her time there, Lita also taught karate and worked as a PE teacher and a strength and conditioning coach. In 2018, she and her husband moved to the United States and began building their life together. They initially lived in Boston, but when COVID hit and home prices near the city climbed too high, the couple explored other areas.

“We came to West Hartford, and oh, we loved it,” Lita said. “We loved LaSalle [Road] and thought, this is such a good vibe.”

They bought a home in 2020 and haven’t looked back. Lita opened her practice on South Main Street, and business has been growing ever since. Effective Motus takes its name from the Latin “motus,” meaning movement, and offers a knowledge-based, advanced soft tissue therapy practice.

We visited her office to learn more about exactly what she does, and how she’s changing lives when it comes to pain management.

You mentioned your practice is knowledge-based, soft tissue therapy. Can you explain how this method helps relieve pain, and how it’s different from a traditional massage?

“I’m gonna make a joke – a lot of clients want to refer people to me, but they don’t really know how to describe what I do!

“Think of it this way. You go to a spa and get a massage. There are usually circular strokes, and the therapist uses cream or oil. I don’t use cream because I need to maintain a good grip and connection with the tissue.

“I’m a massage practitioner, but my approach is different. I work progressively through the soft tissues, layer by layer, following the direction and architecture of the muscles rather than simply working across them.

“I can work from the superficial muscle layers to deeper structures, including the joint capsule and surrounding connective tissue.

“I don’t use cream because I need a direct grip and connection with the tissue. By using different joint positions, angles, and leverages, I can progressively narrow my focus onto smaller, deeper structures and direct movement, force, and muscular contraction into those tissues.

“This allows me to influence tissue length, mobility, and function, while also improving movement around the joint. Ultimately, the goal is to help the tissues move more efficiently and allow the muscles to relax.”

Who do you primarily work with? Athletes and every day people with aches and pains?

“Yes, I work with both the general population and high-level athletes. I’m working with the current National US and Junior World Champions figure skaters; Hana Maria Aboian and Daniil Veselukhin. And I also collaborated with Trinity College and its squash team. We were able to help manage their injuries throughout the season, and they went on to win the Championship.”

What are the common injuries you see?

“With the general population, I see a lot of lower back pain, a lot of neck pain. Suddenly, I’m seeing a lot of people with TMJ issues. I also see migraines and neck issues, and TOS, thoracic outlet syndrome – a lot of tension in the pectorals, and they may have numbness in their arm. I see a lot of people suffering with those kinds of issues because of their lifestyle, you know? We’re more hinged forward, more on the computers, and that creates a lot of these problems. With the athletes I work with, I see a lot of sport-specific wear and tear and minor injuries that come from the repetitive nature of their sport.”

How rewarding is it to help someone who’s been in pain for so long, feel better?

“This is a story that gives me goosebumps. This person had a fusion of two cervical vertebrae, and even after three years, she was still in pain. Her cervical spine lost intervertebral mobility and wasn’t moving well. After five sessions, she said to me, ‘You gave me my life back. I’m not in pain anymore.’

“I also had a person who was about 65 years old. She was in a lot of pain. She had two mastectomies and four attempts at reconstruction, and four times she had rejection of the implants. For a long time, she had to sleep in a sitting position to drain all of the infection, and that completely changed the thoracic and cervical spine movement patterns. She went through a lot of doctors, but she was still in pain. Eventually, she came to see me. I assessed how her joints were moving and started working with her on spine mobility and training. In about four to five months, she was out of that excruciating pain. And since then, she’s constantly sending me people – referrals. She tells everyone, ‘She helped me get my life back’.

“Those are the moments that make what I do so rewarding. When someone comes to you after years of pain and you can help them move better and get back to living their life, it’s incredibly meaningful. Both of these stories are also shared on my Effective Motus Instagram account, @Effective_Motus, if you’d like to hear more about them.”

How can people make an appointment?

“On the Effective Motus website, you can simply choose the Functional Range Release service. It’s part of Functional Range Systems, a world-renowned model for soft-tissue treatment and training. I’m currently the only fully certified practitioner in Connecticut.

“You’ll find different session options when you book online – 45 minutes, 60 minutes, or 90 minutes – depending on what you’d like to work on, whether it’s one joint or multiple areas. You can book directly online, or you can always text me if you have any questions or if you’re not sure which option would be the best fit for you.”

I was diagnosed with cervical stenosis a long time ago. This caused headaches and referred pain. Monica has been an incredible asset on my health team. The exercises she sends me home with are wonderful for keeping things in check. I also worked with her on my Sciatica issues and have not had an issue since addressing them with her. She really knows her craft and is a very skilled practitioner. I trust her completely.
