To the Editor:
I am writing in response to the deeply disturbing incident that took place last week outside of Lox Stock and Bagel in West Hartford, where a man launched into a vile, antisemitic, and hateful tirade against local two Republican volunteers – including spitting at them and invoking Holocaust-related slurs. This attack, described all over the internet, was not only abusive but shockingly public, taking place in broad daylight where two men were just enjoying a beautiful day and a cup coffee. Not only was this repulsive, but this man was listening into a private conversation of two residents of West Hartford. People really need to mind their own business. (Editor’s note: The video of the incident can be viewed on YouTube here. Warning: includes profanity.)
This kind of hate has no place in our town, regardless of political affiliation. Antisemitism, when coupled with political intimidation, becomes a dangerous cocktail that erodes the foundation of civil society. It should outrage all of us – Democrats, Republicans, and independents alike – not because of who the victims are, but because of what it represents: a growing tolerance for hate in our public discourse. Plus, the quiet reaction from the party of “inclusion” the Democrat Party. Where is Kevin Sullivan, Shari Cantor, Derek Slap, Leon Davidoff, and the rest of the Democrat Party?? Their lack of reaction has been deafening and should wake up the Jewish Community here in West Hartford. The sad thing, this is what the Democrat Party has become – a party full of hate and antisemitism.
West Hartford has always prided itself on being an inclusive and respectful community. This incident runs directly counter to those values. Spitting on people, yelling antisemitic insults, and trying to incite fear cannot be ignored or minimized. It demands clear, bipartisan condemnation and swift accountability for those responsible.
We must also recognize that rising antisemitism is not a partisan problem, it’s a societal one, but becoming more partisan. The rhetoric we tolerate in politics and online is spilling into the streets. When violence, hate speech, or discrimination is excused due to political disagreement, we all lose.
I call on our local leaders, community organizations, and residents to stand together against this hatred. Let us reaffirm that public spaces belong to everyone, and that hate – whether based on religion, race, or political identity – will never be welcome in West Hartford.
Sincerely,
Dennis J. Swanton
West Hartford resident
(Dennis Swanton is the Vice-Chairman of the West Hartford Republican Town Committee)
What a bogus letter, all political, hard to believe his sincerity! We’ve seen this, a classic Trump tactic. Dont fall for it!!
Your response to this letter to the editor is clear proof that you are not the solution, you’re part of the problem. You are the exact reason why people are leaving the Democrat party and the Democrats have the lowest approval rating in decades.
Trump’s approval rating is 38%, which is the lowest any president has had at this point since…(checks notes) Trump in 2017.
Is this because of anti-semitism or the gay agenda?
Sane conservatives like myself would like to know.
I agree that antisemitic acts should be denounced, as I’m sure would most citizens of our town,
Seeing that you mentioned a “growing tolerance for hate in our public discourse”, will you similarly condemn these hateful posts from your official WH GOP X account?
“Democrats, including the pro-human trafficking, pro-sexual assault, pro-criminal WeHaDems.”
“The radical, far-left witchhags at LWVCT…” (League of Women Voters CT).
“CBA are bunch of elitist leftist a-holes”.
I”m sure your call for civil discourse was meant to apply equally to everyone, right?
Hopefully someday soon we going to finally get past partisan political baiting and disingenuousness. Any politicians of this sort are uninspiring and most definitely not leaders with true intentions.
It’s hard to believe this isn’t just a politically motivated hit piece when Republicans have been tolerating the grotesque behavior of Donald Trump for a decade now and yet they are not chastised at all. anti-Semitism has no place in our society but neither does bigotry against immigrants, people of color, and women. Innocent people are being kidnapped by masked men in the streets. Where is the outrage for this?
Hopefully someday soon we’re going to finally get past partisan political baiting and disingenuousness. Any politicians of this sort are uninspiring and most definitely not leaders with true intentions.
And by the way, it’s the Democratic party.
Did you not learn about adjectives in fourth grade?
They should have zapped him with that giant Jewish space laser.
Did he happen to use the term “shylock” like, (apparently a secret Democrat), President Trump recently did?
Thank you, Dennis, for making me aware of this incident. I was out of town last week. I believe all persons should have respect for others. Why has the art of civility disappeared in this country?
Whilst the rant proffered at these two enjoying a coffee was a “vile, antisemitic, and hateful tirade”, I don’t think the writer should draw the conclusion that “the Democrat Party has become a party full of hate and antisemitism” because Democratic leaders have not (yet) commented on it. I happened upon this conversation only yesterday, via a friend, and as a proudly Jewish Democrat, was horrified by the rant. Others will follow, but let’s be careful calling for all to stand together whilst we defame the very people we want to join us. We need more listening, and peace, in this world – just as that vile attack showed us!
This seems like a great time to remind everyone that the Lox Stock and Bagel owner has given Trump thousands of dollars over the years in political donations. I haven’t patronized them in over a year and I will never go back in.
Wow, this went off the rails fast. As Dennis knows, West Hartford Democrats have zero tolerance for what appears to have happened at Bishops Corner according to his letter. The difference is that we are not selective like Trump Republicans. We decry hateful words and acts no matter who is the target. In this case, I hope WHPD was called to verify the incident, investigate and go after those who can be identified from the video. But please, let’s not politicize these unwelcome events. An attack on any of us is an attack on all of us in West Hartford.

But never a concern about nonjewish Zionists and THEIR Rights on campus!
Enough of the switch-a-roo.
