To the Editor:

From a young age, I have been committed to serving both my community and my country. I began my service in the Connecticut National Guard as a cannon crew member in the 2nd Battalion, 192nd Field Artillery Unit based in Norwich, CT. My time in uniform instilled in me a deep respect for teamwork, leadership, and civic responsibility, values that continue to guide me today.

For over a decade, I proudly volunteered with the Hartford Marathon Foundation, serving as the Athlete Gear Check Coordinator. In this role, I worked alongside and oversaw more than 90 volunteers to ensure that runners’ belongings were secure while they participated in their races. This experience reinforced my belief in the power of community collaboration and the importance of volunteerism in making large-scale events successful.

I also had the honor of serving as the Walk Chair for Greater Hartford Autism Speaks, an organization that holds a deeply personal significance for me. As the parent of an adult son on the autism spectrum, I have seen firsthand the challenges and triumphs that come with advocating for greater understanding and inclusion. Through Autism Speaks, I have had the privilege of working with dedicated families and volunteers who share a common goal, ensuring that every individual on the spectrum can live with dignity and opportunity.

Additionally, I am proud to serve with West Hartford Fellowship Housing, an organization that provides essential housing options for seniors in our community. Their work is a testament to the compassion and foresight that help make West Hartford a place where residents of all ages can thrive.

My life has been defined by service, to my country, to my community, and to the people who call it home. I am a patriot who believes that strong leadership begins with listening, empathy, and action. As I seek the honor of serving as your representative on the Town Council, I pledge to bring these same values to Town Hall.

It would be a privilege to earn your trust and your vote on November 4th. Together, we can continue building a stronger, more compassionate, and more united community.

Respectfully,

Alberto Cortes
Town Councilor, West Hartford

(Alberto Cortes is a Republican candidate running for re-election to the West Hartford Town Council)
