To the Editor:

It is no accident that West Hartford was named the best town in Connecticut by US News and World Report and landed in the top 20 of best towns nationwide. Good governance is what put us at the top of those lists. That governance has been provided for the better part of two decades by Democrats.

I have heard a lot of fancy talk about non-partisanship from candidates who want nothing more than to distance themselves from the horrific goals of their national counterparts. At this moment in time, if the best you can come up with is, “vote for us, we really aren’t like the other Republicans,” then I see a problem. It feels like the West Hartford Republican platform boils down to “Save us from all this success! Let’s focus on negative things!”

The Democratic team led by Mayor Shari Cantor are all exceptional, but I want to particularly voice my support for Tiffani McGinnis for Town Council. It has been my pleasure to serve with her on the board of Fellowship Housing, where Tiffani has made an invaluable contribution toward ensuring that there is comfortable, affordable housing for our seniors and others, she was instrumental in the development of The Camelot, the Elle, and the recent new building at Fellowship Housing. She embodies the ethic that there is a place for everyone in our town.

Her compassion for her fellow townspeople has translated into real, concrete action that has improved the quality of life in West Hartford.

I cannot forget her touching words during a council meeting where the topic was affordable housing. There were counselors at that time who expressed the idea that affordable housing would bring “the wrong kind of people” (I shudder even to try to interpret what that means) to our town. Tiffani stood in opposition to that idea and gave personal examples as to the difference that affordable housing makes in people’s lives. Her openness and caring about others made her stand out in such a positive way. I am very proud to know her.

Tiffani McGinnis embodies the kind of character I think you should have if you represent our town. She is kind, smart, practical and positive. I hope you will vote for her and return her to the council so that she can continue her work for everyone in West Hartford.

Sincerely,

Diane Tucker
West Hartford
