To the Editor:

A state representative has a responsibility to serve the whole community.

That’s why I am proud to support Tiffani McGinnis– the 18th House District deserves leadership
grounded in respect, inclusion, and accountability.

We need a representative who will work for the people who live here, not simply cater to the expectations of narrow-minded political allies rooted in running the government as a theocracy.

At a time when Connecticut communities are working to build a more welcoming and equitable future, it is troubling to see Republican Philip Tummescheit receive an endorsement from the Family Institute of Connecticut, a far-right group that opposes same-sex marriage and women’s reproductive rights, among other issues.

Endorsements reflect a candidate’s values and priorities.

Voters deserve to know whether those priorities include expanding opportunity and protecting individual rights or promoting an ideological agenda that divides neighbors and further marginalizes the most vulnerable among us.

I want a state representative who brings people together and stands up for everyone’s freedom and dignity.

That’s Tiffani McGinnis and that’s why I’m proud to support her.

If you live in the 18th District, I encourage you to vote for Tiffani on November 3rd.

Sincerely,
Megan Wallett
Vice Chair, West Hartford DTC

One of the most divisive ways of campaigning is to malign the opposing candidate and president. Tiffany is guilty of this twice during the debate between herself and Philip. In this manner Tiffany also dodges the issues. She is unwilling to look at the real issues. This is not only my opinion this is reality as she has served now on the town council and is unwilling to cut costs. Our town taxes are driving people out of West Hartford. Zero affordability is one of the biggest issues here, where I have lived for 40 plus years and my ancestors for five generations before. Dump Tiffany and endorse young blood Philip who is CERTAINLY endorsing fiscal accountability while Tiffany is shielding herself with a divisive platform and does not represent the public good.

And in addition to the above comment on Megan Wallett’s published letter, Megan further engages in negative campaigning and unfair slogans by maliciously labeling the Family Institute of Connecticut as a ‘far right wing’ organization. What a farce, the ‘kettle calling the pot black’, as Megan and her ilk engage in far left activities and promotions. Vote Philip for fairness fiscal accountability and. Focus. Megan never once engaged visually with the public during her debate, she simply reads from a paper with her head down. What does this tell you! She is not only unprepared to be a WH leader.

Correction to above in last two sentences: Tiffani never engages visually during the televised debate but keeps her head down reading a script and further demonstrates proof of being unprepared to be a WH leader. Thank you for publishing these comments and letters both pro and con.

The Family Institute of Connecticut does not reflect my values at all. Their policy proposals and stances on same-sex marriage and adoption are at odds with what I believe are stances of the majority of residents in West Hartford. FIC’s positions are also at odds with the spiritual beliefs of many mainstream churches and denominations of which many West Hartford residents are members. It is no surprise that FIC has lost most of the political battles they have fought here because they do not represent majority views on sensitive family issues.

Not only that, but the founding of their organization decades ago is precisely what catalyzed me to become a decades-long advocate and vocal ally for LBTQI people, many of whom I count among my dear friends and family members. I also chose to join an Open and Affirming church because I believe its is what Jesus would have done were He alive today.

Certainly everyone should worship, live and vote according to their conscience, and I respect people’s right to disagree with my stances just as I disagree with theirs. Nevertheless, our Founders intended and expected that the structure which underpins our Democracy, including the prerogative and duty to vote, should hold us together. Fair elections at all levels of government should insure this. Happily, I do have faith in our local elections process which welcomes newer candidates to run alongside more seasoned ones, even when some voters disagree strongly with their stances on issues of individual choice and freedom in intimate areas of their lives.

I will be voting for Tiffani and wish her the bast as she pursues her campaign
