To the Editor,

I am writing as a resident of West Hartford to express concern regarding the Board of Education’s proposed 7% budget increase. While I strongly support high-quality education and recognize the importance of investing in our schools, this level of year-over-year growth is not sustainable for taxpayers.

Many households in our community are already managing rising costs across the board – housing, utilities, and everyday expenses. A 7% increase in the education budget will ultimately translate into a heavier tax burden, and for many residents, that is becoming increasingly difficult to absorb. At some point, we must ask whether the pace of spending growth is aligned with the financial realities of the community.

This is not a call to reduce support for education, but rather a call for balance and accountability. Before approving such a significant increase, the Board should clearly demonstrate where efficiencies have been pursued, where spending can be optimized, and how this proposal delivers measurable outcomes for students. Responsible stewardship of taxpayer dollars should be just as important as the goals the funding aims to achieve.

West Hartford has a strong tradition of educational excellence. Maintaining that standard does not require unchecked budget growth, but rather thoughtful planning, prioritization, and transparency.

I encourage the Board of Education to revisit this proposal with a focus on sustainability and fiscal responsibility, ensuring that we continue to support our schools without placing undue strain on the community.

Sincerely,

Dennis J. Swanton
West Hartford

Agreed. Not the time for such an increase.
