Twice a year, the Metropolitan District (MDC) provides its customers with an environmentally-friendly initiative, the Household Hazardous Waste Collection (HazWaste) program. The MDC collects hazardous waste and disposes of it through safe, environmentally responsible practices, which in turn protects the health of our communities and the environment.
On Sunday, Sept. 28, 2025, from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m., the MDC will hold a Household Hazardous Waste Collection in West Hartford at the Department of Public Works. The event is free and open to MDC member communities.
Collect your household waste items in their original containers, place them in a box, and bring them to the collection site on Sept. 28, and MDC will handle the rest. The entrance is at the end of Oakwood Avenue, just past Brixton Street. There will be ample signage. Remember to bring ID.
Typical items include kitchen cleaners, garage and workshop chemicals, yard insecticides, Fluorescent light bulbs, hobby solvents, Alkaline and Lithium Batteries, among others. Please take a look at the complete list.
Remember these tips:
- Do not mix different products.
- Do not smoke in your car or near the collection area.
- Be prepared to wait between 5 and 30 minutes. Bring something to read for yourself and a game or toy to entertain your child.
West Hartford residents have the option to take household hazardous waste to any MDC collection event in the region. For a list of locations and dates, please go to the MDC website. The next West Hartford collection will be held in June 2026.
