New Year’s Trash Collection, Schedule Changes, Christmas Tree Collection in West Hartford

Trash and recycling was delayed for one day for the week of Dec. 25, 2023 and will also be delayed by one day the week of Jan. 1, 2024, Town Hall and other Town of West Hartford facilities have adjusted holiday hours, and information about Christmas tree collection.

The Town of West Hartford wishes you and your family a Happy Holiday season! Throughout the rest of the week, and through the New Year’s Day holiday, there are a few changes in hours of operation.

TRASH COLLECTION DELAY

Since Christmas and New Year’s Day both fall on a Monday, the collection of trash and recyclable material will be delayed by one day for both weeks. Monday’s area will be picked up on Tuesday, with each subsequent day delayed by one day. Place barrels at the curb by 6 a.m.

MUNICIPAL BUILDINGS

Municipal offices will be closed in observance of New Year’s Day on Monday, Jan. 1, 2024.

MDC RESERVOIRS

The MDC recreational facilities will have limited hours for the holidays as well. The reservoirs located at 1420 Farmington Avenue and off Route 44/Albany Avenue will close at noon on New Year’s Eve. Those facilities will be open on New Year’s Day.

PUBLIC SCHOOLS

West Hartford Public Schools will have its holiday break from Monday, Dec. 25 to Jan. 1, 2024. Students will return to school on Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2024.

LIBRARIES

All three libraries will be closed on  Jan. 1.

PUBLIC SKATING

The Veterans Memorial Skating Rink will be open on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. Looking for something fun to do? Check out all the public skating sessions!

CORNERSTONE AQUATICS CENTER

  • Dec. 31 – 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Jan 1 – Closed

ROCKLEDGE GOLF COURSE

The Golf Shop hours posted online indicate that the shop is open during the winter from Tuesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The golf course is open for recreational use during the winter months. The trails are available for jogging, walking, hiking, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing daily from dawn to dusk. Click here for a map.

Residents may bring their dogs on the course but must follow the rules that apply to all parks and school yards year-round.

RECYCLING CENTER

The Yard Waste and Recycling Center will be closed in observance of New Year’s Day on Jan. 1, 2024. The Yard Waste and Recycling Center is now closed for the season on Saturdays. Service will resume on Saturday, April 6, 2024.

The Recycling Center’s hours of operation are 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday.

SPECIAL CARDBOARD & ELECTRONIC WASTE COLLECTION

The Department of Public Works encourages residents to drop off extra holiday cardboard, boxes, and electronics to support the town’s ongoing effort to reduce waste and promote recycling in our community. DPW and Take 2 Inc., a Waterbury-based electronics recycler, will be onsite to collect material, free of charge, from West Hartford residents only.

The remaining date and time for the special cardboard collection is Thursday, Dec. 28, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the West Hartford Yard Waste and Recycling Center, 25 Brixton Street. Click here for more specific details.

CHRISTMAS TREE COLLECTION

Public Works will make two town-wide sweeps to pick up Christmas trees. The collection runs from Tuesday, Jan. 2 to Friday, Jan. 12, 2024.
