West Hartford is thriving, and here are some reasons why.
By Mayor Shari Cantor
When voters ask me why they should support the Democratic team for Town Council, I usually respond with a question of my own:
What made you choose to live in West Hartford?
Most people say the same things: a strong sense of community, safe and walkable neighborhoods, a nationally recognized and diverse school system, and thriving commercial districts filled with incredible shops and restaurants.
None of this happened by accident. It’s the result of thoughtful and strategic policies enacted under consistent Democratic leadership.
This November, voters face a choice: continue the progress we’ve made or turn to a Republican team aligned with the divisive politics and damaging policies of the Trump administration.
Ask yourself:
- Will even one local Republican candidate speak out against Trump’s tariffs that are driving up the cost of groceries, fuel, and building materials?
- Will they oppose the dangerous erosion of free speech and academic freedom?
- Will they denounce the rollback of clean energy initiatives – like the abrupt shutdown of the Revolution Wind project, which Connecticut and other Northeast states were counting on?
- Will they speak out against Trump’s recommitment to polluting fossil fuels like coal, and his all-out assault on clean energy jobs and infrastructure?
- Will they defend the Department of Education against its dismantling – or speak up for K–12 programs, teacher training, and civil rights enforcement?
- Will they oppose cuts to Medicaid and food assistance impacting our most vulnerable residents?
- Will they oppose the fiscal irresponsibility of adding $4 trillion dollars to the national debt burdening our children and grandchildren?
- Will they support the human rights of our LGBTQ community and immigrant communities and everyone in our community?
The response is predictable: Trump isn’t on the ballot.
But the truth is, he doesn’t need to be. His agenda advances because Republican leaders at all levels – including local – remain, at best, silent – and at worst, complicit and openly supportive. Whether through quiet assent or vocal endorsement, they enable the erosion of democratic norms and help push policies that threaten our community’s values and future.
In contrast, West Hartford Democrats have a record we’re proud of.
We’ve approved nearly 1,500 new housing units – many of them deed-restricted affordable housing – putting us on track to surpass the state’s 10% affordable housing goal when the next statewide report is released.
As a fully developed community, West Hartford has little unused land for traditional development. But instead of letting that limit us, we’ve embraced creative solutions – converting parking lots, vacant convents, closed synagogues, contaminated campuses, and underused hotels into vibrant, productive spaces.
These adaptive reuse projects have helped diversify our housing options to support residents at every stage of life – from first-time buyers, to renters, to empty nesters ready to downsize.
We’ve also continued to invest in our nationally recognized public school system. Awards and accolades are great – and our district earns many – but the real success is what you see in the classroom: talented teachers preparing students to lead with knowledge, empathy, and integrity.
We’re investing in safety too, adopting a Vision Zero policy aimed at eliminating traffic fatalities and serious injuries. This means real changes on our streets – with quick-build traffic calming, better trail and pedestrian connectivity like the Trout Brook Trail, and stepped-up traffic enforcement.
And we’re revitalizing our infrastructure. West Hartford is undergoing a once-in-a-generation transformation: widened sidewalks, new tree plantings, expanded outdoor dining – all designed to create a more beautiful, accessible, and vibrant community. Yes, construction causes temporary inconvenience – but the long-term benefits will be transformative.
West Hartford is thriving because of Democratic leadership – leadership grounded in values like truth, ethics, science, humanity, kindness, and respect.
Now, it’s up to us. The future of our town – its policies, its spirit, its direction – will be decided by what we do this November (and remember early voting starts Oct. 20).
We may not be able to change the national political climate, but here in West Hartford, we can protect what matters. We can continue building a community we’re proud to call home.
Let’s keep West Hartford moving forward.
Let’s keep it strong.

I don’t know if this was submitted today and published today or submitted prior today and published today — but the fact that this was put up here on the day of Charlie Kirk’s funeral — as a disgrace on multiple fronts :( :(
September 21st marks the anniversary of the 1994 release of the album “American Idiot”. Why did they schedule Kirk’s funeral on that occasion? ANOTHER DISGRACE ON MULTIPLE FRONTS FOR YOU TO CLUTCH YOUR PEARLS ABOUT!
If you need a referral for a good TDS therapist let me know. Youve got it bad

West Hartford is indeed thriving thanks to Democratic leadership.
And as much as they pretend otherwise, the WH GOP are ardent supporters of the MAGA agenda, and won’t hesitate to deploy their anti-freedom, anti-growth policies here if given the opportunity.
Vote blue to stay on the path of the prosperous, vibrant, caring community we have under Democratic leadership.
As evidenced by the Maga Venga Bus at the recent candlelight vigil for their Horst Wessel.
I appreciate Mayor Cantor’s opinions on national issues, but it would be helpful if she could be more specific on the local impact. For instance:
> How have Trump’s tariffs impacted West Hartford’s finances? What do We-Ha Democrats propose to address these impacts?
> How have changes at the Department of Education impacted West Hartford schools? What do We-Ha Democrats propose to address these challenges?
> How have changes to Medicaid and food assistance impacted West Hartford residents? What do We-Ha Democrats propose to mitigate these impacts?
> How does the size of the national debt impact West Hartford residents and town finances? What response(s) are proposed by We-Ha Democrats?
That being said, Mayor Cantor’s subsequent comments on recent changes in town (increased housing, changes to traffic safety, improved infrastructure) are helpful contributions to the local debate.
The point is – when candidates speak specifically about how the political, economic, and social climate impacts the lives of We-Ha residents – and what they propose to do to address these challenges – they help We-Ha residents make informed decisions at the ballot box in November.
All DemocRats have done for West Hartford is raise taxes! And, after reading Mayor Cantor’s article, hate President Trump! As a senior, West Hartford is becoming unaffordable. We need new leadership in West Hartford and Connecticut. Vote out DemocRats who refuse to sharpen their pencils and don’t support America First policies!
Ironic that as a senior your comment was so juvenile.
Are these the same democrats that took our pension fund from 120% funded down to 39% funded by kicking the can down the road for 20 years? Chris Droney, a past Democratic Mayor, had us at 120% funded and then the next 4 democrat mayors put us in a hole. It is getting better because of the stock market and we are using a much more realistic rate of return.
With all this new development why are our taxes still exploding?
This is what real leadership looks like. West Hartford has its challenges, but Mayor Cantor and her Town Council Democratic colleagues always step up. Few towns in America are as well led by leaders who put people ahead of partisanship. They listen, engage with our community, bring people together, plan ahead, budget prudently and always put residents and taxpayers first. No wonder West Hartford is so highly rated for fiscal responsibility, innovation, schools, services and being a great place to live. As Mayor Cantor’s comments point out, this is all the more difficult when Trump’s cult of personality tries to divide us, take away our freedoms, hurt our economy and pass the buck to state and local taxpayers.
Mayor Cantor’s also accurately calls out Republicans who offer nothing but pillars of platitudes locally while embracing Trump nationally. In fairness, two of the Republican candidates (Cortes and Harris) are credible. Two others (Lewis and Zelazny)are at least consistent in their right-wing zealotry. But then are two (Lyons and Wang) whose political opportunism led them to chose this moment in time, when so much in our democracy is so at risk, to become Trump Republicans.
Thankfully, West Hartford voters have a clear choice this year to keep our town on the right track.
How can her honor possibly lead the town with such disdain for half of the council that she presides over?
If everything in her opinion piece is true, then the mayor has given up on representing the entire town.
How was this opinion piece the only party option for drumming up votes?
It has no nuance; it’s just a list of irredeemable differences.
We have 2 mayors; a mayor of the people: cutting ribbons & marching in parades but also a career politician that prioritizes her party above her constituents.
If the minority party is insincere, then why engage in the same behavior?
If community is paramount and the minority party poses a “threat to our community’s values”, then why divide the community with this opinion piece?
For what it’s worth; there’s been robust commercial development in town but neither West Hartford high school has been in the CT top 5 in US News ranking since before Cantor reigned in 2015.
But it is in the 2025 top 10 (Hall High School) CT high schools.
If you’re hung up on that top 5 number, West Hartford schools rank in the top 3% on a national level.
It takes a lot of courage to ignore a post’s substance and agree with and downplay a throwaway statistic.
Unfortunately your comment doesn’t fall in the top ten We-Ha replies.
Whatever you say buddy
