A 22-year-old West Hartford man was taken into custody Wednesday morning on charges that include animal cruelty and assault after police found that he had killed one kitten, seriously injured another kitten by both shooting it and hitting it, and shot and killed a pet rat, and assaulted his girlfriend.
According to police, at 10:23 a.m. Wednesday a caller reported that someone inside a Sky View Drive apartment had just killed two kittens. When police arrived, they found that one kitten was dead, and another was severely injured.
The deceased kitten had been hit with a TV remote, police said, while the injured kitten was shot with a BB gun and also hit.
According to Sgt. Michael Alquist, the injured kitten was taken to Connecticut Veterinary Center to be treated for its injuries.
Police reported that they also found a pet rat on the premises that was deceased as a result of having been shot with a BB gun. According to police, the rat had been killed several days earlier.
Police arrested Corey McCall, 22, of Sky View Drive in West Hartford.
Alquist said the incident was related to a domestic violence situation. Police were also told that McCall had assaulted his girlfriend several days ago.
“This doesn’t happen too often,” Alquist said regarding the animal cruelty. “It’s very disturbing.”
McCall has been charged with two counts of cruelty to animals, disorderly conduct, third-degree assault, unlawful discharge of a firearm, and possession of less than four ounces of marijuana.
He is being held on $150,000 bond and due in court on Thursday, Alquist said.
