Record-Breaking Performances Propel West Hartford Swimmers to State Open

Swimmers from West Hartford’s Conard and Hall high schools broke several records at Wednesday night’s Class L meet, and multiple swimmers will compete individually and as part of relay teams in the State Open on March 17.

Wednesday night’s Class L Finals started off on a high note for Hall swimmers Patrick Keith, Jack Russo, Ian Harker, and Jack Hosey. The four swimmers combined for a 1:39.62 school record, and record-breaking finish in the 200 Yard Medley Relay, finishing fifth in the class and dropping two seconds off their trials time from Saturday afternoon. Conard swimmers Alex Chernysh, Colby Roy, Julian Flores, and Ben Arky finished sixth in the race with a season best time of 1:40.41.

As the evening wore on school records continued to fall, with Conard’s Chernysh finishing the 200 Yard Individual Medley in a record-breaking time of 1:57.38, and Hall’s Hosey breaking his own 50 Yard Freestyle record with a time of 22.08. The meet concluded with Hall’s Connor Skarzynski, Harker, Keith, and Hosey breaking the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay record with a time of 3:21.32.

In addition to the record-breaking swimmers, both teams had strong representation in an incredibly competitive class.

For Conard: senior captain Matt Remigino – 200 Freestyle (20th 1:54.58), junior Auston Comrie – 50 Freestyle (12th, 22.84) and 100 Freestyle (12th 49.77), senior captain Nathan Rosado – Diving (17th, 284.35), junior Ben Giroux – Diving (14th 308.10), freshman Charlie Krajc – 100 Butterfly (fifth, 53.64) and 100 Backstroke (fifth, 54.77), sophomore Julian Flores – 100 Butterfly (16th, 56.18) and 100 Backstroke (20th, 59.30), sophomore Ben Arky – 100 Freestyle (sixth, 48.90), junior Colby Roy – 100 Freestyle (20th, 51.16) and 100 Breaststroke (14th, 1:03.44), senior Giovanni Laquintana – 500 Freestyle (18th, 5:10.66), Chernysh- 100 Backstroke (third, 53.54), and sophomore Lenny Belyaev – 100 Breaststroke (20th, 1:05.83). Conard’s 200 Freestyle Relay (Roy, Remigino, Alex Held, Comrie) finished sith overall with a time of 1:32.58 and their 400 Freestyle Relay (Comrie, Arky, Krajc, Chernysh) finished fifth with a time of 3:19.81.

For Hall: Skarzynski – 200 Freestyle (18th, 1:52.09) and 500 Freestyle (12th, 4:58.28), Harker – 200 Individual Medley (13th, 2:05.30) and 100 Fly (17th, 55.82), freshman Mitchell Baboff – 200 Individual Medley (19th, 2:09.02), Russo – 200 Individual Medley (21st, 2:10.62) and 100 Breaststroke (10th, 1:01.77), Hosey – 100 Freestyle (fifth, 48.32), Keith – 100 Backstroke (seventh, 55.87), and freshman Kobe Dominguez – 100 Backstroke (23rd, 59.89). In addition to their two record breaking relays, Hall’s 200 Freestyle Relay (Ryan Arnold, Baboff, Facundo Garcia, Skarzynski) finished 12th overall with a time of 1:36.13.

Conard finished fifth overall in Class L with 365 points, and Hall finished sevent with 267 points.

Both West Hartford schools will be sending individual swimmers and relay teams to the State Open on Saturday, March 17 at Yale where they will look to improve upon their times from class finals.
