Registration for the 2021 West Hartford Amateur Golf Tournament will be open through June 18, and Tournament Chairman Peter Davison said course conditions at Rockledge are excellent this year and he is looking forward to sharing the course with some of Connecticut’s best golfers.

The event, which will be held on Sunday, June 27, is open to residents and non-residents, and features individual gross and net scoring for men and women. There will be prizes awarded separately for men and women, divided in to age groups 14-54 and 55-plus.

The event will support the West Hartford Food Pantry as well as the Rockledge and Buena Vista Junior Golf Program, and the Rockledge Capital Improvement project. The focus of the Capital Improvement project will be on replacing the irrigation system and resetting and improving sand traps.

“Sign up to play as an individual, or with friends and family. Those who do not register as a group can be paired with others. Please complete one registration per entrant. GHIN handicaps are required,” states the announcement of the event.

Rockledge Golf Club has a new PGA Pro, Andrew Killoran, assisted by Kevin Smith, and Tim Nedeau is the superintendent.

Davison provided the following information regarding the course history: “For those that do not know, Rockledge Golf Club was founded by W. Sherman (one of the first members of the CT Golf Hall of Fame). Many events were hosted here in the early days (starting in the 20s) and Mr. Sherman had such greats as Tommy Armour as a pro and Julius Boros as an accountant at Rockledge. He and his team were active in the founding of the Insurance City Open – now the Travelers.   After his death, the estate sold the course to the town in the 50s. Come see what we are doing now and enjoy some competitive golf too. We think  you would enjoy the course.”

The one-day event is the same day as the finals of the Travelers Championship, and Davidson suggested that participants may want to watch the event after playing at Rockledge Grille, or one of Beachland Restaurant Group’s other restaurants (Beachland Tavern and Beachland Smoke) – or head to Cromwell to watch in person if you can have a ticket.
