Summer program offers a mixture of instruction for dancers ages 3 and up

Summer is the ideal time to pursue dance education without the pressures of school and other activities, and The School of Ballet Theatre Company (SBTC) is ready to welcome dancers to their West Hartford studios for summer dance studies.

SBTC’s summer program allows dancers to improve their skills, explore a variety of dance styles, and learn at a more rapid pace. This summer’s programming includes six different intensives from June 6 thru Aug. 26 for dancers ages 3 and up, which are structured to accommodate dancers’ schedules who wish to train throughout the summer as well as those who can only attend select weeks.

SBTC kicks off its 2022 Summer Programming with its second annual Variation Intensive, led by BTC’s artistic director, artistic advisor, and ballet mistress. For three sessions, BTC will offer a unique experience to intermediate/advanced pointe students to learn a classical ballet variation, receive professional 1:1 coaching, and perform in costume for a guest panel of dance professionals. Students may also invite family and friends to attend the variation performance. Students must have at least two years of pointe experience to participate in the variation intensive.

SBTC’s Summer Half Day Dance Intensives will provide dancers the opportunity to enhance their training, artistry and performance skills in half day training. SBTC offers three different half day intensive programs for multiple levels:

  • Primary Ballet II and Ballet I Half Day Dance Intensive, three sessions offered Aug. 8 to Aug. 26, Monday thru Friday, from 1 to 4 p.m.
  • Ballet II & III Half Day Dance Intensive, four sessions offered July 11 thru Aug. 5, Monday thru Friday, from 1 to 4 p.m.
  • Ballet IV – Ballet VI Half Day Dance Intensive, four sessions offered July 11 thru Aug. 5, Monday thru Friday, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

From Monday thru Friday, for three or four hours, dancers will train in ballet and pointe/pre-pointe daily, while each individual session will explore one different dance style such as Jazz, Contemporary, or Ballet Repertoire to prepare a small showcase to culminate the Half Day Intensive session. The showcase will be presented each Friday of SBTC’s Half Day Intensive program for the dancers’ family and friends to attend.

SBTC’s popular Mini Intensive is also back for Summer 2022. The intensive is offered to develop younger dancers’ ballet technique, accompanied by crafts, games, fun and more.

Mini Dance Intensive for Primary Ballet I and Creative Movement, 3 sessions offered Aug. 8 to Aug. 26, Monday thru Friday, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Each week, SBTC’s Mini Intensive dancers will be immersed in the dazzling world of one, selected, classical ballet. They’ll watch excerpts from a professional production, discuss the story and characters, and create ballet-related crafts. Throughout the week, they’ll also learn a ballet dance related to the classical ballet theme, which they will share with family and friends in a short showcase performance at the end of the week at BTC’s studio.

Before dancers head back into their Fall classes, BTC’s annual Ballet Bootcamp will close out its Summer Dance offerings. In addition to ballet and pointe technique, BTC’s Ballet Bootcamp focuses on strength, flexibility, core stability training, and dance conditioning. Dancers also learn about nutrition and injury prevention. This rigorous program aims to prepare students for any upcoming auditions and their dance school year. Ballet Bootcamp is open to intermediate and advanced dancers.

Ballet Bootcamp is offered to Ballet III thru Ballet VI, 1 session offered Aug. 15 to Aug. 19, Monday thru Friday, 5:30 to 9 p.m.
