Shana Griffin the Registered Dietitian at the ShopRite of West Hartford is sharing six of her favorite recipes (see PDFs below) that will be part of her game day spread. Enjoy your Super Bowl festivities without the calorie overload of your typical wings, nachos, dips and sauces.

Research shows that on average, a person consumes 1,000-1,200 calories in snack foods alone during the Super Bowl. That’s well over half of the calories you need for the entire day!

Here is the Recipe Line Up:

  1. Baked Sweet Potato Fries
  2. Grilled Chicken Cheesy Spinach Quesadillas
  3. Butternut Fundido Dip
  4. Buffalo Chicken Bites
  5. Endive Caprese Boats
  6. Fresh Cut Crudités with Hummus and Tortilla Chips

General Game Day Eating Rules:

FIRST QUARTER: Fill up at the start of the game by eating foods high in fiber & protein- hummus and vegetables and butternut fundido dip fit the bill!

SECOND QUARTER: For mindless snacks, think of high volume, low calorie foods, especially fruits and vegetables

THIRD QUARTER: Try for something light, but delicious such as buffalo chicken bites or grilled chick cheesy spinach quesadillas.

FOURTH QUARTER: End the game with sweet thoughts and go for a healthy dessert!

Final Tips for Success:

  • Drink water throughout the game to avoid drinking your calories. Water will also help to fill you up and minimize overeating.
  • Try to put your food on a plate rather than eating out of the serving dish to help control your portion size.
  • Have a small meal or snack before going to the party. Going on an empty stomach may cause you to over eat.
  • Scope out all of the food first and then decide what you want so you can make healthier choices.
