What the heck happened to January??? Did you blink, because you might have missed it. What’s NOT to miss is what’s happening in West Hartford during the month of February. Whether your a Valentine’s Day lover or a Valentine’s Day avoider, into a good Mardi Gras celebration, or even if you furry friend wants in on the action, there’s something for everyone so get out there and enjoy We-Ha this month!

1. Pop-Up Kids Market

When: Saturday, Feb. 1, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.

Where: West Hartford Town Hall, 50 South Main St., West Hartford, CT 

Feb. 1 at West Hartford Town Hall from 11 a.m.-3 p.m.: Come shop and support our young entrepreneurs from West Hartford and the Greater Hartford Community! All kid vendors created their own products/services in order to learn business to market skills and make a little extra cash!

2. West Hartford Spelling Bee

When: Feb. 4, 6-8 p.m.

Where: West Hartford Town Hall

Kids from Bristow, King Phillip, and Sedgwick middle schools will show off their hard work at the West Hartford Spelling Bee on Tuesday, Feb. 4 at 6 p.m. in the West Hartford Town Hall Auditorium. “Challenge” /ˈcha-lənj/ and “concentrate” /ˈkän(t)-sən-ˌtrāt/ are some of the traits – and just a few of the thousands of words – that students are focusing on.

3. Keeping Dr. Martin Luther King’s Dream Alive

When: Wednesday, Feb. 5, at noon-1 p.m.

Where: University of Hartford

Attend the University’s annual “Keeping Dr. Martin Luther King’s Dream Alive” observance in February featuring one of the world’s most well-known African American poets, Nikki Giovanni.

Recognized as an icon of the Black Arts Movement that emerged from the Black Power Movement of the 1960s and ‘70s, Giovanni has published poetry anthologies, recordings, and nonfiction essays that cover topics ranging from race and social issues to illustrated picture books for children. Her works include poems responding to the deaths of Martin Luther King Jr., Medgar Evers, Robert Kennedy, and Malcolm X.

4. Valentine’s Pawty!

When: Saturday, Feb. 8, 2020 at 1-3 p.m.

Where: Wagging Tails Pet Resort & Spaw – West Hartford

Join us Saturday Feb. 8 from 1-3 p.m. for a Valentine’s Pawty at the indoor dog park at Wagging Tails Pet Resort & Spaw, 635 New Park Ave., West Hartford! They’ll be plenty of Puppy Love here! Get ready for plenty of kisses, with our adorable Kissing Booth, games, treats and plenty of room for your pooch to play, and to show some love, at Connecticut’s first indoor dog park! $10 per dog. Preregistration suggested. Call 860-621-7387 (Pets) to preregister. Proof of rabies vaccine is required.

5. Valentines Brunch Crawl 

When: Sunday, Feb. 16, at 11 a.m.-6 p.m.

Where: Multiple Locations

6. Mardis Gras at New Park Brewing

When: Saturday, Feb. 22, at 7:30-10:30 p.m.

Where: New Park Brewing

On Feb. 22 we will be celebrating the food and music of New Orleans at New Park Brewing with a very special free Mardi Gras show. We will be bringing together members of Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews & Orleans Avenue, Brass-A-Holics, Deep Banana Blackout, Alan Evans Trio, Wild Adriatic, and more to provide you with a full night of live New Orleans Funk. We will be spinning the music of New Orleans all day in the taproom beforehand, and our food truck of the day will be featuring some New Orleanian inspired offerings.

7. Cooking Class

When: Sunday, Feb. 23, at 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

Where: The Blue Elephant Trail

8. Galaxy Cupcakes!

When: Wednesday, Feb. 26, at 3:30-4:40 p.m.

Where: Children’s West Hartford Libraries

It’s outta this world! Come bake some Galaxy Cupcakes on Wednesday, Feb. 26 from 3:30-4:40 p.m. Workshop open to children ages 8-12 and meets in the Noah Webster Library Meeting Room.
