In the best of times, what the members of the West Hartford Auxiliary do for The Village for Families & Children is remarkable. This year, their dedication has been truly inspiring.

Despite a pandemic-driven multi-month shutdown of their Second Chance Shop, the West Hartford Auxiliary stayed engaged, upheld a safe retail environment, reopened in the fall with reduced hours and managed to raise $56,000 to help support the tens of thousands of families and children served by The Village. Their donation is thanks to proceeds from shop revenue and a gift from the Sturgis Family Foundation.

For the past two years, the West Hartford Auxiliary has been supporting The Village’s programs that build a community of strong, healthy families who protect and nurture children by selling new and gently used clothing, accessories, antiques, toys and household items at their shop – which is run and managed by volunteers.

The West Hartford Second Chance Shop and three others – located in Glastonbury, Simsbury and Suffield – contributed a combined total of more than $400,000 to The Village this year and have raised more than $6 million for The Village over the years.

“Each year I’m amazed by the dedication of the many volunteers in our Glastonbury, Simsbury, Suffield, and West Hartford Auxiliaries who run our Second Chance Shops,” said Galo Rodriguez, The Village president and CEO. “But this year, that dedication was unmatched. Through unprecedented challenges of the pandemic, they stepped up and showed how deep their commitment to helping children and families served by The Village truly is. We’re so grateful.”

The West Hartford Second Chance Shop is located at 175 Park Road and is open 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Donations are accepted during open hours. Visit thevillage.org/second-chance-shops or call 860-461-7067 for more information.
