The Town of West Hartford has launched a survey to solicit feedback from the community about affordable housing, as a means to further goals and strategies in the recently-adopted Plan of Conservation and Development.

West Hartford’s Town Council last year authorized creation of an Affordable Housing Advisory Group to assist with preparation of an Affordable Housing Plan, as required by Connecticut General Statutes § 8-30j.

The 22-question survey, which will be available through April 30, is considered a critical tool in preparation of the town’s Affordable Housing Plan. The survey solicits respondent’s opinions about a variety of topics related to affordable housing, with questions about what think of when they hear the term “affordable housing,” where affordable housing should best be located in West Hartford, who they believe may need affordable housing, the type of affordable housing that may be needed (size, apartment vs. single-family, etc.), and what the impact of increasing multi-family housing might have on the budget and quality of life in town.

“This survey will help gather information on demographics, community housing needs and preferences and it is important for us to hear from residents, businesses, taxpayers and people that work in the community,” Mayor Shari Cantor said. “The results will be utilized to guide the preparation of an Affordable Housing Plan which will help to encourage a greater diversity of housing types, costs and increase housing options for current and future residents.”
