An apartment on the top floor of a three-story multifamily building on Oakwood Avenue in West Hartford is uninhabitable after a blaze broke out on Sunday evening.

Deputy Chief Adam Pacheco said a fire on the top floor of 144 Oakwood Avenue was reported at 5:24 p.m. on Sunday, and while units were en route multiple additional calls came in, indicating that fire and smoke were visible in the rear of the building.

The first unit, Car 4, arrived at 5:28 p.m., and noted that heavy smoke and fire were visible, resulting in the response of additional units as well as mutual aid to address the structure fire.

According to Pacheco, “Squad 1 stretched fire attack lines into the rear of the building and up to the fire located in an apartment on the 3rd floor. The primary attack line knocked down the bulk of the fire.”

Other units searched to ensure that the unit was not occupied and checked for extension into other apartments. The unit where the fire originated was confirmed as unoccupied, and there was minor damage to neighboring apartment units, Pacheco said.

An overhaul was conducted on the third floor, and the blaze was successfully extinguished and officially placed under control at 6:01 p.m. “Utilities were controlled and a Rapid Intervention Team was established,” he said.

There were no reported injuries to firefighters or to residents of the building related to the incident.

The cause and origin are under investigation by the West Hartford Fire Marshal’s Office, Pacheco said.

The West Hartford Building Official’s Office has deemed the unit where the blaze originated as uninhabitable due to significant fire, smoke, and water damage, and the Red Cross will be assisting the residents.

The West Hartford Fire Department offered thanks to dispatchers, West Hartford Police, and mutual aid partners Hartford Fire Department, Newington Fire, UConn Fire, and AMR for assistance at the scene as well as providing coverage for the town while units were committed.
