Last weekend was an exciting one for the Conard girls basketball team. The third annual “Alumni Weekend” began with many former players attending the Conard vs. Northwest Catholic varsity game – a game that Conard won 56-50. The last time the Conard girls beat the Northwest Catholic girls was more than 30 years ago!

The Connors family had split allegiances during the game, as Conard freshman Delaney Connors (#2) played against her sister, Northwest Catholic senior Haley Connors (#22).

According to Conard assistant coach Eddie Litos, Conard last beat Northwest Catholic during the 1982-83 season, in a 60-58 victory in the West Hartford Classic, a tournament that included Conard, Hall, Northwest, and Kingswood Oxford. The tournament was held for several years, from 1982 until 1987. Conard and Northwest only played a handful of times until the CCC realigned in 2009 and the teams began to play each other twice per season. According to Litos, Northwest Catholic currently leads the series 15-2.

On Saturday morning, the Conard alumni, coached by former coach Rod Steier (1994-98) scrimmaged the varsity and JV teams. The “kids” won, 34-24.

The Conard indoor track varsity season finally kicked off on Saturday at the Elm City Coaches Invitational at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven. It was certainly an outstanding season opener for senior Alexander White, who won first place in the boys long jump event with a distance of 20′ 6.25. Sophomore Gwen Geisler also came home with the gold, finishing first in the girls 1600 meter with a time of 5:24.90.

Other top five finishers include sophomore Lindsay Chen who took fifth place in the girls 3,000 meter with a time of 11:10.92 and freshman Matthew Remigino who finished fourth in the boys 3,000 meter with a time of 9:31.44. Senior Alexander Perron finished fourth in the boys pole vault with a height of 11’0. Senior Chidebe Ndibe placed fifth in the boys long jump at 19′ 11′.
