The West Hartford Fire Department responded Monday afternoon to reports of a fire at a single-family home on Beverly Road. [Updated, 8:30 p.m.]

A single-family home on Beverly Road is temporarily uninhabitable following a fire that broke out Monday afternoon.

Deputy Chief Neal Sinatro said dispatchers received calls at approximately 3:41 p.m. Monday about flames visible from the top floor of a single-family residence. “We arrived on scene in under two minutes and confirmed that we had fire blowing out a window on the third floor of the right side of the home,” Sinatro told We-Ha.com.

He said the on-duty shift commander upgraded the incident to a “working fire” and additional units as well as mutual aid to cover the West Hartford stations was requested.

Firefighters were advised that no occupants remained in the house and units began an “aggressive interior fire attack,” Sinatro said, coordinated with a primary search that confirmed there were no occupants or pets inside the home.

The fire was quickly extinguished, but according to Sinatro, “[crews] really had to do a lot of overhaul work,” including opening up the ceiling because the blaze had extended into the attic space. They also had to cut a hole in the roof, he said.

The fire was declared under control at 4:31 p.m., Sinatro said.

The cause and origin are under investigation by the West Hartford Fire Marshal, but Sinatro said it appears the fire may have started on the third floor.

According to Sinatro, there were no injuries to civilians, and in an email update Monday evening he said, “One firefighter sustained a minor injury and was transported to a local hospital for evaluation.”

While the fire damage was limited to the third floor and attic, the house is currently uninhabitable due to smoke, and water damage throughout the structure, Sinatro said. He said the fire broke the attic window open, and there was some impact on the home next door, where the heat of the blaze slightly melted some of the siding.

The two displaced residents of the home are being assisted by the American Red Cross, officials said.

“The West Hartford Fire Department extends its sincere appreciation to our partners from the West Hartford Police Department, AMR, and the UConn Fire Department for their assistance at the scene. We also thank the Hartford Fire Department and the Newington Fire Department for providing station and town coverage while West Hartford Fire units remained committed to the incident,” Sinatro said.
