West Hartford’s Department of Public Works will once again hold a special post-holiday cardboard and electronic waste recycling event, scheduled for the Department of Public Works Yard Waste and Recycling Center at 25 Brixton St.

This year’s collection is being spread out over three days, and the town has waived its permit requirement for drop off of either cardboard or electronic waste during these three days. Permits are required for drop-off of all other materials.

The collection will be held on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, Dec. 27, 28, and 29, 2022, from 7 a.m.-4 p.m.

The cardboard and electronics recycling event is open to West Hartford residents only (no commercial businesses), and is part of the town’s efforts to reduce waste and promote recycling in the community.

Take 2, Inc., a Waterbury-based electronics recycling company, will be on-site with Public Works to collect eligible items.

Residents dropping off cardboard and boxes are asked to bring only clean cardboard, break down or collapse boxes, remove all non-cardboard material (like styrofoam, wrapping paper, tape, packing material, and plastic), and to please not leave material on the ground outside the dumpster. Plastic film can be dropped off and recycled at many locations.

Cardboard is recycled into new, much needed products like boxes and tissue paper, according to West Hartford Recycling Coordinator Katherine Beer Bruns.

Eligible electronics for the recycling event include desktop and laptop computers, cords for electronics, printers, fax machines, monitors, TVs, cellphones, tablets, video games, game consoles, VCR/DVD Machines, remote controls, keyboards, and small appliances like toasters.

Strings of holiday lights are also eligible for electronics recycling, and should not be placed in the blue recycling barrel.

Public Works notes that the following items cannot be recycled at the facility: smoke detectors, ballasts, propane tanks, paint, household hazardous waste, and any appliances that contain freon such as air conditioners, refrigerators, and dehumidifiers.
