West Hartford Police assisted Newington Police Tuesday night by apprehending three suspects who allegedly stole a car from the center of Newington.

A broadcast was made by Newington Police just before 10 p.m. Tuesday that a gray Volvo S60 had just been stolen and West Hartford Police said they stationed officers already on patrol in the southern end of town to be on the lookout for the vehicle on the roadways that lead from Newington into West Hartford.

Police said that the vehicle was observed heading north on Newington Road, and an officer was able to deploy a stop stick underneath one of the tires while the vehicle was stopped at the red light at Newington Road and New Britain Avenue.

The vehicle’s rear passenger side tire was flattened, police said, but the suspects continued driving the vehicle with the flat tire, heading east on New Britain Avenue. According to police, the suspects did not stop the vehicle until it became completely disabled as they were attempting to turn right onto South Street.

The driver was apprehended by an officer stationed at that intersection, but the two passengers fled on foot toward the train tracks, police said.

They were located a short time later near Brixton Street, and “after a short foot pursuit” were apprehended by police.

Police said that all three suspects were found to be juveniles and were turned over to Newington Police.
