A man observed by police operating a vehicle at a high rate of speed in the Corbin’s Corner Shopping Center parking lot was charged Thursday night by West Hartford Police with 10 counts of second-degree breach of peace and one count of reckless driving.

In a social media post, West Hartford Police said multiple 911 call were received at approximately 9 p.m. Thursday regarding a vehicle that nearly struck pedestrians and other cars in the parking lot outside of Trader Joe’s on New Britain Avenue.

When police arrived they also observed the reckless driving, conducted a motor vehicle stop, and arrested Omar Azimi, 19, of Hamden.

Sgt. Amanda Martin confirmed that Azimi’s vehicle was towed from the scene.

Martin told We-Ha.com that police do not have any information about how fast Azimi was traveling in the parking lot, but said there “was no indication that he was impaired at the time of the arrest.”

Police said Azimi was released on $5,000 non-surety bond and will appear in court. Online court records do not yet indicate a court date.

Online records do not show any previous convictions or pending charges against Azimi.

“We are extremely thankful for the witnesses who reported the incident, and for the quick response of the officers. Fortunately, there were no injuries or damage that occurred from this reckless behavior,” police said in a Facebook post.
