West Hartford resident John Alissi has been named coach of the co-op girls ice hockey team of Northwest Catholic High School and Mercy High School for the 2015-2016 season.

Alissi played hockey for two years at the United States Military Academy and another two years at Williams College, where he was named MVP his senior year, as well as ECAC Player of the Week. He went on to play and coach for EV Bruckberg in Germany from 1993-1994.

Since 2003, he has been the head coach or assistant coach of various Connecticut hockey teams and is a USA Hockey Level 4 Certified Coach. His most recent coaching positions include Head Coach of Boys U18 & U16 High School/Midget Spring & Summer League Teams (2011-2014), Head Coach of Connecticut Polar Bears Girls U12 Tier I Team (2012-2013), Head Coach of Connecticut Polar Bears Girls U14 Tier II Team (2013-2014) and Head Coach of Connecticut Polar Bears Girls Tier I U14 Team (2014-2015). He is also a Power Skating Instructor and Hockey Skills Instructor for both Summer Camps and Clinics.

“It is an honor to be named the first head coach of the new Mercy/Northwest Catholic Co-op Girls Hockey Team,” said Alissi. “I am extremely excited for the season and it is great to help with the expansion of girls’ high school hockey in Connecticut. My goal is to make Mercy/Northwest Catholic Co-op Girls Hockey a competitive high school hockey program, to continue to develop the skills and understanding of each individual player and to build a team that the players, schools and parents are proud to be associated with.”

“Northwest Catholic and Mercy are excited to bring another girls high school hockey program into Connecticut, and we couldn’t be happier that John will lead us as our head coach,” said Dave Eustis, President and Chief Administrator at Northwest Catholic. “John has extensive experience playing and coaching, and I truly think the girls that play for him will benefit from his knowledge and passion for the game.”

The team will play in the Southern Connecticut Conference, with their first practice on November 23, 2015. The team’s home rink will be Champions Skating Center in Cromwell. There will be a meeting in September for interested student-athletes and their parents.
