Scholar-athletes from throughout Connecticut were recognized Sunday at the Aqua Turf as the Connecticut Association of Schools (CAS) and Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference (CIAC) held its 39th annual CAS-CIAC Scholar-Awards Banquet.

This year there were 350 athletes honored – two from each member high school – “whose academic and athletic careers have been exemplary, whose personal standards and achievements are a model to others, and who possess high levels of integrity, self-discipline and courage,” the CIAC said in an announcement.

West Hartford students selected by their school administrators included Jillian da Costa Pinto and Gavin Sherry of Conard High School and Tobias Ruffo and Bridget McGann of Hall High School – all multi-sport athletes and captains.

Da Costa Pinto participates in soccer, gymnastics, and outdoor track and field, while Sherry is a soccer and indoor and outdoor track and field athlete.

Ruffo participates in soccer, indoor track, and outdoor track and field, while McGann participates in field hockey, ice hockey, and outdoor track and field.

Two athletes – Brianna Lebrun and Aidan Mahoney – were also honored from Northwest Catholic High School, which is located in West Hartford.

Retired sports broadcaster Bob Picozzi reprised his role as emcee – for the 36th consecutive year. The keynote address was given by Morgan Tuck, a four-time National Champion at UConn, five-year WNBA pro, and currently director of Franchise Development for the Connecticut Sun.

The 2022 Michael H. Savage Spirit of Sport Award was presented to Derby High School All-State cheerleader Bridget Wright, an All-State cheerleader.
