Curious about starting backyard composting but not quite sure how? Here is an opportunity to jump in and get started!

West Hartford’s Department of Public Works is hosting an Online Backyard Compost Event! Purchase your discounted backyard compost barrel today right here at West Hartford’s online store and start transforming your valuable kitchen scraps from trash into rich soil amendments. Purchased barrels will be available for pick-up on April 24 from 9 a.m.-noon at the Department of Public Works, 17 Brixton St. (Oakwood Avenue entrance on side of building) where a master composter will be available to answer questions.

If you would like to learn more about backyard composting, join a free 30-minute (virtual) composting workshop on Wednesday, April 14 at 5 p.m., where a University of Connecticut master composter will explain the basics. There will be plenty of time for Q & A at the end. See details below for how to join the workshop.

It will also be live streamed on the Town of West Hartford’s Facebook page and on WHCi’s YouTube channel.  The workshop will be recorded.

Did you know compostable kitchen scraps are about 23% of what we throw away in trash? Join your West Hartford community and be a part of the town’s efforts to decrease the volume of trash sent to garbage facilities. In the process we help reduce methane and other greenhouse gas emissions, create rich nutrients for our soil and enjoy the satisfaction of adopting a new sustainability practice.

Happy Earth Day 2021!
