West Hartford resident Lisa Book is organizing the Michael E. Walsh Memorial 5K Run which will take place on June 28 to benefit FISH NWCT.

On June 28, 2015, the Michael E. Walsh Memorial 5K Run will be held at Rentschler Field in East Hartford at 9 a.m. to benefit FISH/Friends in Service to Humanity of Northwestern CT. Also scheduled are a Kid’s Fun Run at 8:30 a.m., and a 5K Walk starting at 9 a.m.
This event will honor the memory of Michael Walsh of Torrington who was tragically struck and killed by a snowplow while running on Jan. 4 of this year. Michael was the son of West Hartford resident Steve Walsh.
The proceeds from the 5K Race will support the work of FISH NWCT, an organization helping those in need with food and shelter, and where Michael devoted countless hours in volunteer service.
Michael was an experienced and accomplished runner who was a cross country and track standout at St. Paul’s High School in Bristol. He went on to continue his running career at Fordham University where he was a four year member of the indoor and outdoor track teams and the cross country team. Michael was recognized as a scholar athlete every year while he was at Fordham University. He performed at Fordham’s Campus Comedy Club as a stand-up comedian.
Michael graduated Fordham, Summa Cum Laude, with dual degrees in Physics and Biology. One of his immediate goals was to complete his first marathon which he was training for when he died. He had been admitted to medical school at Saint Louis University where he planned to matriculate in August. He was 25 years old at the time of his death.
Runners should know that kids may run for free, that there is a division for adult walkers, that there will be awards for the top three running finishers in each age category, and that there will be awards for the top walkers. Runners will also have access to a massage therapist at the field.
Registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. on race day. Adults pre-registered will be $30, and registering at the 5K Race will cost $35.
