Speaker of the House Brendan Sharkey (D-Hamden) has appointed Rep. Brian Becker (D-West Hartford, Avon and Farmington) to serve as chairman of the Regulation Review Committee.

“With Brian’s extensive background as a lawyer, his attention to detail, and the respect he has earned on both sides of the aisle for his work ethic and thoughtful approach, I think Brian is a perfect fit for this important position,” Sharkey said.

Becker said he is honored to be selected as a key member of Speaker Sharkey’s leadership team and that he looks forward to the challenge of addressing regulatory issues in our state.

“Constituents continue to tell me that burdensome regulations have made it more difficult for them to conduct business,” Becker said. “I look forward to working diligently on the Regulations Review Committee to streamline and simplify Connecticut’s regulations while still safeguarding the public policy goals that the regulations were designed to protect.”

It is the responsibility of the Regulation Review Committee to review regulations proposed by state agencies and approve them before regulations are implemented. This position was adopted since all regulations have the force of law, and it is important that regulations do not contravene the legislative intent, or conflict with current state or federal laws, or state or federal constitutions.  The Committee also is charged with working with state agencies to reduce the number and length of existing regulations.

Becker, who is beginning his third term representing the 19th District composed of parts of West Hartford, Avon and Farmington, will also serve as a member of the Commerce, Energy and Technology, and Government Administration and Elections Committees.
