Joining high school and college athletic departments nationwide, Kingswood Oxford will once again hold  “Play 4Kay Day” events starting on Monday, Feb. 13.

The Wyverns girls basketball team will start the week off with a big game against Watkinson. The game is a rematch of the final from the 2016 KIT which Watkinson won, 81-71. All fans are encouraged to wear pink in an effort to raise awareness for cancer research.

Last season KO raised $1,041 in its very first “Play 4Kay Day and the goal is to top that total this year. Students, faculty, staff, parents and friends can help the cause by purchasing a shirt for $10 at lunch or from athletics staff and will get a dress down day Monday the 13th when wearing the shirt.

Play 4 Kay is an entire school event. Come support MS and US basketball and squash games all week of the 13th and help the Wyvern community top the $1,000 that we raised last year. All proceeds go to the Kay Yow Cancer Foundation.

In partnership with the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and the V Foundation for Cancer Research, Play4Kay is a national fundraising effort in memory of former North Carolina State University head coach Kay Yow, who was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987 and battled the disease until 2009.

Last year Athletic Director Debbie Fiske spearheaded the KO community’s effort to “go pink”  and students, faculty, and staff donated money to wear pink clothing or specially designed Play 4Kay t-shirts. The Girls’ Basketball and Girls’ JV and Varsity Squash teams all wore their shirts during their home games. Additional money will be raised via the sale of pink ribbons this year as well.

Since its inception in 2007, the Fund has raised over $5 million.

“I felt that participating in this nationwide effort was a great way for our kids to give back and to be part of something bigger than themselves,” said Fiske, the starting point guard for the UConn Women’s Basketball team from 1988-92. “Our contribution is our own small way of helping Coach Yow’s fund get toward that goal she set out before she died – which was providing more women with hope in the fight against cancer.”
