West Hartford’s Conard High School held its 69th commencement ceremony on June 11, 2026, bidding goodbye to the Class of 2026 as they head into their next chapter.
[Editor’s Note: Hall High School also held commencement on June 11, and the story and photos will be published later on Friday, June 12.]

For members of Conard High School’s Class of 2026, graduation day marks a turning point as they step confidently into the next chapter of their lives and celebrate years worth of effort, growth, and discovery.
After a brief weather delay due to the threat of thunderstorms that passed by to the north, Conard’s graduating class of 2026 gathered in the steamy air and sunshine on Thursday, June 11, 2026, to celebrate and hear messages about belonging, reflection, and courage – and to honor the senior class and administration, which were instrumental in the school’s 2026 “High School of the Year” award from the Connecticut Association of Schools.

Music from the Conard music groups’ 2025-2026 concerts played as a prelude, while excited audience members found their seats. A crowd of families, friends, and loved ones grew, all sprawled across the Conard baseball field and adjoining areas, some sitting in folding white chairs and others sitting in their own chairs, excited for the ceremony to come.
Some guests may have noticed the new “I Belong Here” mural on the side of Conard’s building as they entered the ceremony through the back of the school, heading towards the athletic fields, foreshadowing the theme of the evening and representing what Conard values – their distinct sense of belonging which they have created within the school community.

At 5:15 p.m., the grand processional of graduates entered to a prerecorded playing of the traditional “Pomp and Circumstance” music by the Conard Orchestra, which kicked off the ceremony. To welcome the audience, Assistant Principal Juan Melián offered his introduction to the evening, inviting graduates to “reflect on the memories made, the lessons learned, and the future that lies ahead.”

This reminder beautifully encompassed the true purpose of the evening – to both celebrate and honor each and every student’s achievements. This was followed by Conard’s Senior Choir who took the stage to sing the the National Anthem which was interpreted in ASL by Arta Soroush.

The 2026 Class President and Co-master of Ceremonies, Julianna Farquharson, then took the stage to welcome the audience, sharing that “regardless of how long you’ve spent at WHPS [West Hartford Public Schools] it’s still an amazing and rewarding accomplishment for all of us to be here today. A beautiful testament to the inclusivity of the Conard community.”
The Conard Senior Choir returned to perform Conard’s Alma Mater, and Farquharson express gratitude towards the music department which has “brought music and joy to [the] halls.” Melián also returned to call to attention the hard work and dedication of staff and graduation organizers who made the event possible.

Assistant Superintendent and former Conard Principal Julio Duarte offered his remarks – sharing a powerful metaphor portraying the value of making mistakes. Duarte said that while eating recently he bit his tongue, and something that happened after “34 million successful repetitions of a very basic task … was a perfect reminder that no matter how much experience we have, and how confident we are, we can still make mistakes.” It’s a message that greatly resonated among the audience of new graduates looking out onto a future of unknowns.
Duarte shared that “success was built through determination, curiosity, and ultimately learning from mistakes” because mistakes are “proof that you’re on this amazing and meaningful journey called life.”
After inspiring graduates to walk into their futures with the confidence in making mistakes, Duarte concluded that “graduation is not the finish line. It is really the start of another amazing journey.”

Principal Jocelyn Tamborello-Noble. Conard High School graduation. June 11, 2026. Photo credit: Ronni Newton
Conard Principal Jocelyn Tamborello-Noble reflected on the “village” of the Conard community. There’s a “Vietnamese proverb that says, when you eat the fruit, remember who planted the tree,” she said, honoring the work faculty and staff put in to help this class of graduates grow.
Tamborello-Noble spoke as a Conard alum who immigrated to the U.S. from Chile at a young age, and as a parent of a member of the Class of 2026, discussing how the school is a place of belonging and how belonging was the one word that resonated for her in this class. Conard is “a foundation where individuals uncover their true identities” and “a community where every person truly belongs,” she said.
Tamborello-Noble went on to say, “There will be times when you feel uncertain where you fit. In those moments remember this. You have always belonged here, and you will always have a place at Conard.” Honoring the special community that was built within these students’ four years at Conard is a reminder of the impact each one of them had on the school.

Conard’s Senior Choir returned to perform “Landslide” by Fleetwood Mac, a fitting tribute to the graduating class with themes of getting older and reflecting on change. Farquharson told the audience that the lyrics – “Climbed a mountain and I turned around, and I saw my reflection in the snow covered hills” – “mirrors the very moment we are standing in today. Looking back at our childhood, while stepping into the unknown.” It’s a song that perfectly captures the reflection of four years of memories made in the halls of Conard High School, she said.
Class Commencement Speaker Bridget Dawson had a clear message for her classmates. “Belonging is simple. It is choosing, day after day, to be your most authentic self. It takes the courage and honesty to stop hiding behind the version of yourself you think other people want to see,” she said, sharing that it was a realization she came to while in an unfamiliar place – traveling through Spain and Portugal with Conard’s Solo Choir.

Dawson also shared lessons learned throughout her life. First, reflecting on the passing of her cousin Dillon, “Life is too easily taken for granted. We do not have forever to become ourselves,” she said. Dawson also shared a lesson from her best friend’s older brother who told her: “In high school, the most important thing you can be is nice.” Both messages deeply resonated with the members of the graduating class preparing for the rest of their lives.
She went on to remind students that the feeling of belonging is a priceless gift and ended her speech with the reminder to “[not] waste time trying to hide yourself, embrace time by being yourself.”

Faculty Speaker Michael McCarthy addressed the crowd, offering his hopes for the soon-to-be graduates. First being to “Build your circle, believe in yourself, and don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone.” McCarthy also said, “I hope you find courage to break out of your shell but when you step out of your comfort zone, that’s when things can change.”
This hope of confidence is entirely fitting to the teens preparing to take the next step in life, and McCarthy left them with a final reminder that “you’re never alone” and you can “lean into your people, the ones who support you, who challenge you, and who show up for you.”

Filled with hope and inspiration, each of the members of the Class of 2026 crossed the stage to receive their diplomas as well as a letter from a member of the Conard faculty, while a sea of proud, emotional, and excited loved ones cheered them on.
Once diplomas had been received, Board of Education member Jonathan Weiner offered a charge to the graduates. He spoke about our remarkable town and what makes it special. In the context of the “250th birthday of our nation,” Weiner reminded graduates of the “importance of being an informed and engaged citizen.”

“Always remember that West Hartford has given you something very precious – an education built on the belief that an informed, engaged citizenry is the foundation of a free society,” he said. With a final reminder of what the future holds and an honoring of all the hard work it took to reach the present, Weiner said, “Graduates, please rise if you are able … on behalf of the West Hartford Board of Education … it is my honor and privilege to present to you the graduates of the Conard high school class of 2026.”
With speeches concluded and the diplomas distributed, it was time for the Class of 2026 to move their tassels from right to left and throw caution – and their caps – to the wind. The mortarboards flew in the air, signifying the culmination of four years of hard work and the celebration of exciting opportunities to come.
It was time for this “village” to take their photos and rejoice in the community in which they will always belong.
