This President’s Day weekend, a special edition of Ballet Theatre Company’s Through the Tulle costume exhibition will be at the Children’s Museum in West Hartford. The exhibit will feature fairytale character costumes from BTC’s production of Sleeping Beauty (2019) with kid-friendly activities and meet & greet opportunities with the Lilac Fairy ballerina.

October 2020 marked the opening of Ballet Theatre Company’s Through the Tulle touring costume exhibit, featuring 22 handmade costumes from its vast collection. The exhibition is a celebration of BTC’s 22nd (or “tutu”) season and a way for the company to stay connected with its local audience while theaters and performance venues remain closed.

Since its grand opening event, held at the Noah Webster House, the exhibit has toured to the West Hartford Art League and the Hill-Stead Museum. The collection includes costumes from the famous ballets, The Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, and Don Quixote, all of which the company has performed in its 22-year-long history. Each costume has been handmade by BTC’s team of talented costume designers who have shared inside stories, anecdotes, and the design processes behind each piece in the collection.

The exhibit, tailored for children and those young at heart, will include an associated activity sheet to get to know the characters and learn about the different kinds of performance costumes. Excerpts of the performance will be playing for museum-goers to see the costumes in motion, and the Lilac Fairy will make a special appearance on Saturday and Sunday between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. to meet and greet with visitors.
