The John P. Webster Library will host a traveling exhibit from the American Baptist Society entitled: A Resilient Faith: Japanese American Baptists During World War II.
The short window of opportunity to view it while it’s in town is from April 27 to May 30 in the First Church West Hartford Chapel at 12 South Main Street. Free and open to the public. Exhibit hours are as follows, and please call the library number when you arrive (860-232-3893):
- Monday-Thursday: 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
- Sunday: 9 a.m.-noon
- Closed Friday and Saturday
The exhibit examines this chapter in American history through the lens of faith and perseverance, illuminating stories of determination and community among the 70,000 Japanese migrants who were forcibly confined during the war.
“It’s about the stories, and sharing those stories that humanize the experience, and I think that’s what’s important here – understanding the human side of history.”
The library and church are pleased to host this important work during the month of May, when we also take time to reflect and celebrate the important role that Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders (AANHPIs) have played in our shared history.
The John P. Webster Library is a vibrant, welcoming spiritual resource center open to everyone – church membership is not required to check out their materials. Located at First Church West Hartford, the library is found beneath the church sanctuary, and there is a new entrance on the south side of the building (facing the town library). The JPW Library might be West Hartford’s very best secret! Stop in and explore the collection!
