Five fifth graders from West Hartford’s Bugbee Elementary School were honored on May 14 at the Connecticut Student Writers award ceremony, held at the Jorgensen Center for the Performing Arts at the University of Connectited and presented by the Connecticut Writing Project at UConn.

Four of the Bugbee students were in attendance to accept their awards, including Pietro Belli, who received a Gold/Platinum award for his nonfiction submission, La Scuffiata, which is also included in the 20226 publication of Connecticut Student Writers Magazine.

Silver winners include:

  • Finley Timme, The Towering Zipline of Doom (nonfiction)
  • Nolan Gusy, A Walk in the Woods (nonfiction)
  • Wesley Morin, What Could Possibly Go Wrong? (nonfiction)

Tali Langsner received Honorable Mention for The Hit (nonfiction).

The Connecticut Writing Project accepted submissions earlier this year from students in grades K-12, in the categories of poetry, prose fiction, prose nonfiction, and art.

According to the Connecticut Writing Project website, the organization “sponsors the Connecticut Student Writing Contest and Connecticut Student Writers (CSW) Magazine, both of which were established in 1987 by the Connecticut Writing Project to honor excellence in writing and art by Connecticut students from kindergarten through high school. Annually, hundreds of students from across Connecticut submit entries demonstrating their passion for writing and art. Selections from this large pool of submissions in poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and art are chosen to be recognized at each grade level, and a select few appear in our annual magazine, Connecticut Student Writers.”

The awards event was presented by the Connecticut Writing Project, with sponsorship from the UConn English Department and the Connecticut State Department of Education.
