Conard Boys Swimming and Diving Wins CCC West Opener

The Conard boys swimming and diving team hosted Southington on Feb. 28 at Cornerstone Aquatics Center in West Hartford.

Conard Boys Swimming and Diving opened their CCC West schedule with a win over Southington on Tuesday afternoon, defeating the Blue Knights 88-84.
The Red Wolves opened the meet with a first place finish in the 200 Medley Relay behind the efforts of Nathan Lowney, Zach Goslee, Luke Scheinfeldt, and Matt Krol. Teammates Kian Abolfath, Yohannes Robson, Ethan Hunt, and Finn Harned took the third place points giving the Red Wolves a 10-4 advantage.
In the 200 Freestyle Conard’s Andrew Phan was locked in a back and forth race with Southington’s Steven Dlugos, but Phan was able to hold off the challenge and took first, while teammate Cobly Dainiak took third after battling Southington’s Lucas Kiveliyk for the spot.
In the 200 Individual Medley Scheinfeldt and Lowney combined for a 1-2 finish to give the Red Wolves a 29-14 lead, while Hunt took the top spot in the 50 Freestyle to give Conard a 38-21 advantage heading into the break for diving.
On the board Conard’s Mike Burns put on a show, winning the event by 70 points while qualifying for the state tournament and setting a new personal best high score of 189.55. Henry Plocharczyk placed third, helping the Red Wolves build their lead to 47-25.
The Red Wolves looked to build on their momentum coming out of diving, with Lowney, Dainiak, and Abolfath sweeping the 100 Butterfly, while Phan and Hunt finished 1-2 in the 100 Freestyle, and Krol grabbed the top spot in the 500 Freestyle.
With four events remaining, the Red Wolves were ready to put the meet our of the Knight’s reach. Phan, Dainiak, Lowney, and Krol raced to a first place finish in the 200 Freestyle Relay, while Robson, Burns, Matthew Robinson, and James Delibero combined for third, locking up the win for the team.
Conard closed the meet by taking first in the 100 Backstroke, 100 Breaststroke, and 400 Freestyle Relay.
Conard’s next meet is Tuesday, Feb. 4 at 3:45 p.m. at Cornerstone Aquatic Center vs. a perennially tough Farmington team who was narrowly defeated by Hall on Tuesday afternoon. Conard is now 1-0 in the CCC West and 3-2 overall.
In addition to the win, the following athletes qualified for the state tournament:
