“We got a good team win tonight,” said Conard head coach Matt Cersosimo. Conard hosted and beat the Newington Nor’easters 16-6 on Friday, Oct. 23, on a very chilly night, evening Conard’s record to 3-3 as Newington dropped to 1-5.

After a disastrous and scoreless first quarter with two fumbles, Newington intercepted a pass from Conard, but didn’t do anything with it. A few drives later, Newington scored what appeared to be the first touchdown of the game with four minutes left in the second quarter, but a flag was thrown and an illegal shift penalty retracted the score.

After their penalty, Newington had a turnover and Conard used the last bit of time they had left to score a touchdown and successfully kick the extra point with three minutes left in the first half to put the Red Wolves in the lead 7-0. Coach Cersosimo commented, “Our defense was really, really locked in tonight. I thought we tackled well, and we got ourselves aligned properly.”

Deep into the third quarter with only four minutes left, Conard was able to push Newington far back enough to get a safety, making Conard’s lead 9-0. Still in the third quarter, after Conard got the ball back, they ran it into the end zone, extending their lead even further to 16-0.

After their fairly eventful third quarter, Conard was not able to score in the fourth quarter, but their defense was able to shine with many impressive plays to keep Newington away from the end zone, letting in just one touchdown and ultimately ending the game at 16-6 and continuing Newington’s five-game losing streak.
