The newly-formed Traprock Ridge Land Conservancy held an evening of celebration and appreciation at the Wintonbury Hills Golf Course on Oct. 1.

The TRLC was formed in April 2023 by a merging of the West Hartford, Wintonbury, and East Granby Land Trusts.

The event was well attended by 150 people, including West Hartford Mayor Shari Cantor, Bloomfield Assistant Mayor Tony Harrington, former East Granby First Selectman Jim Hayden, and conservancy members and other outdoor lovers. Several local law firms, consultant Danosky & Associates and the Connecticut Land Conservation Council, who helped bring about the successful merger, attended and were recognized and appreciated.

Funds for the merger and the first three years of operation of the new conservancy were provided by the Carmen and Lucia Buck Foundation. The Richard P. Garmany Fund at the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving was the lead sponsor for the evening.

There were brief remarks by the new TRLC President, Amanda Thompson. The primary purpose of the new organization remains the same as the three original land trusts – to protect open space and promote public appreciation of the natural environment across the region.

Members and volunteers now protect a combined 47 properties, covering 637 acres. Properties include forests, wetlands, and fields. There are hiking trails and great locations to observe birds and other wildlife. There are also four active farm properties, including a community garden and farm used for educational programs.

Please visit the website for more information about the TRLC and upcoming activities, including hikes and nature oriented presentations.
