West Hartford Police charged a 24-year-old Marlborough man with DUI after he drove his car straight across several lanes of North Main Street early Sunday morning and crashed into the self-service payment booth of the Lyons Service Center.
Police responded to a call regarding the crash at 2:12 a.m. Sunday.
According to Capt. Jeff Rose, Brett A. Dootson of Holly Lane in Marlborough had been pumping gas into his 2015 Volkswagen Jetta at the Shell Station on the northeast corner of Albany Avenue and North Main Street.
Police said that after Dootson finished pumping gas, he struck a portion of the cement barrier at the Shell Station, drove over the curb, ran over a water pipe sticking out of the ground, crossed North Main Street across the front landscaping of the Lyons Service Center and struck the self-service payment booth that was located between two gas pumps.
All of Dootson’s airbags deployed, and the payment booth sustained significant damage. The landscaping at the Lyons Service Center, the barrier at the Shell station across the street, and the water piping were also damaged as a result of the incident, police said.
Dootson was charged with DUI and failure to drive right. He was held before being released on $500 bond.
