Poll workers will ask prospective voters for some form of identification – a driver’s license, utility bill, paycheck, or other ID – to confirm eligibility to vote. For complete details about acceptable identification, visit the Secretary of the State’s website.

Those who have already taken the opportunity to utilize the early voting option do not need to visit a polling place on Election Day. The Secretary of the State’s Office reported on Monday morning that 10,291 early votes were cast in West Hartford – the most of any town in the state. Norwalk was next, with 9,662 early votes cast. Throughout Connecticut, early voting took place for 14 days, from Monday, Oct. 19 through Sunday, Nov. 1, with 455,169 votes cast statewide.

Those who are voting by absentee ballot can still drop their ballots off by 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 3 at one of the secure Election Drop Boxes which are located in front of Town Hall or in the Faxon Library parking lot. Ballots – including those that have been mailed – must be received by 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 3 in order to count.

What if I’m not yet registered to vote?

Those not yet registered to vote but who are eligible to do so may register to vote and vote via the Same Day Registration on Election Day in Room 400 of West Hartford Town Hall Room.

If you are using the Same Day Registration option and your state-issued identification does not have your current address, please note that proper documentation of your correct address must be provided, and include, according to the Connecticut Secretary of the State’s website, a PRINTED “copy of a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck or government document that shows your name and address.”

For more information about documentation needed for Same Day Registration, see the Registrar of Voters webpage.

Results

According to the Town of West Hartford, tabulator tape reports will be posted at each polling place and at central counting and will be able to be viewed by the public. After the polls have closed, the Connecticut Secretary of State’s Election Night Reporting website will post the town’s unofficial results by district, as received. Election results will be certified and finalized following a meeting with the Town Clerk, Head Moderator, and Registrars of Voters.

Restricted zones

There are two different restricted zones at polling places, and all zones will be clearly marked with signage. Those holding signs or other materials in support of candidates must remain outside of the 75-foot sign posted outside the entrance used for each polling place.

A curbside voting sign will also designate a spot in the parking lot at each polling place for curbside voting. Traffic cones will mark off 20 feet in two directions from the parking spot.

A 250-foot sign will also be placed outside each polling place in compliance with a new state law. “The 250-foot sign provides information about restrictions on law enforcement outside a polling place and restrictions on masks/facial coverings worn by anyone within the 250-foot zone of the polling place,” town officials said.

Inactive Voters, New Voters, and ID

Inactive voters registered in West Hartford, and voters who have moved within town and haven’t updated their registration, can update their registration at their correct polling place and vote there on Election Day, according to town officials. “Those voters must show proof of residency. Active voters at their correct polling place must either show identification or sign form ED-681. Acceptable identification is either a Social Security Card or any pre-printed identification that shows the voter’s name and address, name and photo, or name and signature. Many work IDs, for example, are acceptable. Some first-time voters who have previously been notified must show proof of residency and identity.”

The Registrars of Voters Office is open for extended hours on Tuesday, Nov. 3, from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. For more information, visit the Registrars of Voters web page at www.westhartfordct.gov/vote/.
