Food Allergy Awareness Forum is Wednesday in West Hartford

State Sen. Derek Slap will host a food allergy awareness forum at West Hartford Town Hall.

State Sen. Derek Slap (D-West Hartford) will host a Food Allergy Awareness Forum from 6-7 p.m. on  Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2019, in the West Hartford Town Hall Town Council Chambers in order to increase public awareness of  just how pervasive and potentially lethal food allergies can be for people of all ages, from infancy to adulthood.

The public is invited to attend.

Joining Sen. Slap will be:

  • State Rep. Jillian Gilchrest (D-West Hartford)
  • Dr. Kristen Cooksey Stowers, Assistant Professor of Health Disparities at the University of Connecticut  Department of Allied Health Sciences She will speak on health equity and health disparity and how it relates to food allergies and food allergy awareness.
  • Alicia Fidalgo Wise, the West Hartford parent of a toddler with several food allergies. She will speak about her experience with a non-verbal child and how challenging it is to navigate this issue without community awareness, support, and compassion. She will also speak about how food allergies can impact a child’s physical, mental, fine motor, and gross motor development.
  • Scott Zweig, the West Hartford parent of a school-aged child with a life threatening food allergy. He was instrumental this year in passing House Bill 5452, which requires school bus drivers to be trained on epinephrine cartridge injector administration He will speak about how to advocate for food allergy legislation and about his desire to see increased food labeling legislation in Connecticut and at the federal level.
